No images? Click here Monday, January 3 Welcome! This month, MCW Center for Disease Prevention Research (CDPR) is sponsoring a 30 day nutrition and health challenge, Nutrition for the New Year. Throughout January, we will provide an every-other-day newsletter with interesting science articles, health tips, plant-based recipes, and commentary that will inspire you, challenge your mind and spirit, and hopefully help you to jumpstart a healthy 2022. You will notice that Nutrition for the New Year will not focus at all on weight loss. This is because the goal of a whole food plant based diet is to enhance health. Weight loss is the happy side effect of healthy nutrition. You may wish, however, to document your baseline weight and blood pressure. You may even wish to start the month with a selfie (for your own use). On behalf of the Center for Disease Prevention Research we with you a Happy Nutrition for the New Year! So why try plant-based nutrition for 30 days?
For this initial issue of Nutrition for the New Year we wish to share an article that is representative of a large body of literature demonstrating the benefit of plant-based nutrition. The study examines the effects of people's diet composition on heart disease risk. It found a clear reduction in risk of cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular death, and overall causes of death for those whose dietary intake had the highest percentage of plant foods and lowest of animal foods. In contract, those whose diet had the highest percentage of animal foods and lowest of plant foods had worse outcomes. We hope that people who complete Nutrition for the New Year will wish to continue a plant-based diet. Research shows that a fully plant-based diet is ideal, however, one must discover their own achievable goals. An intentional reduction of animal foods is one's diet is likely to have a positive health impact. Try this vegetarian wheat berry chili from Rania Dempsey, MD! Wheat berries have a nutty-chewy texture that appeals to meat eaters. Make a double batch and save half for a later period when you don't want to cook! Visit your primary physician, local pharmacy, or do it at home to get your baseline weight and blood pressure checked. Go back at the end of January to check your progress!
