Hampton Pier Rebuild Project
Community Update Spring 2023 - Issue 1
Getting underway on the Hampton Pier Rebuild Project Parks Victoria is pleased to be getting underway with preparations to rebuild Hampton Pier. Over recent years it was identified that the pier was visibly slumping and following an engineering assessment, found to be unsafe and was closed to the public in mid-2020. With funding committed in the 2022-23 State Budget, this project will replace the old structure with a brand-new pier, both enhancing the area and safely supporting the many activities people love and enjoy at Sandringham Harbour. We’re looking forward to delivering this project and welcoming the community back onto the water. At this stage it is too early to share firm project timelines, but we will communicate progress to ensure people are well-informed as we move through the planning and design stages and towards construction.
Early works start this Spring
As a first step in the project, Parks Victoria will remove the deteriorated Hampton Pier. Removing the old pier will provide better access for summer’s on-water events and improve public safety for those spending time at Sandringham Harbour. Removing the old pier will also help to prepare the site for building the new pier.
Designs for new Hampton Pier
The new Hampton Pier will be built with a design which reflects community and stakeholder aspirations, which were sought as part of the Sandringham Harbour Local Port Area Plan consultation in 2022. Public piers are some of Victorian’s favourite places for fishing, boating, and simply enjoying time in nature, and the new Hampton Pier will provide a safe and accessible community facility for people to enjoy. Designs for the new Hampton Pier will be ready for public release in 2024 and include the key elements the community identified during consultation, featuring a low landing and floating pontoon.
Early works - Removal of old Hampton Pier
Planning phase - Prepare construction-ready designs for new Hampton Pier
- Procurement and permits for construction
Delivery phase* - Commencement of construction
- Completion of construction
* Commencement of delivery phase is dependent on the completion of the planning phase.
Fishing and boating access While Hampton Pier is closed, Port Phillip offers excellent land-based fishing from nearby piers, including Black Rock Jetty, Mordialloc Pier and Middle Brighton Pier. Sandringham Breakwater is also a popular fishing location. For boaters, short term public berthing is available at Middle Brighton Pier and Black Rock Jetty. Mordialloc Creek also provides boating facilities.
Working with the community and our stakeholders
We’ll communicate project information via the dedicated project webpage. Parks Victoria is also working closely with a stakeholder reference group with representatives from local businesses, user groups, organisations, and Bayside City Council.
Protecting ecological values
Hampton Foreshore is a serene and picturesque spot with plentiful native vegetation. As we’ve done in other locations, the project methodology will be developed with involvement from our marine scientists and independently evaluated to mitigate potential impacts on marine life and ecology.
The Sandringham Harbour Local Port Area Plan identified some key improvements which are important to begin implementing for better safety and functionality. Parks Victoria is now undertaking steps to widen the Harbour’s navigation channel for safer boating and non-compliant moorings and unseaworthy vessels will be removed over the coming months and those affected will be contacted.
