No images? Click here The latest twist in Indonesia's 2024 presidential election saga The public witnessed another plot twist in Indonesia's presidential election drama following the removal of Constitutional Court chief judge Anwar Usman by the court's ethics council. Anwar was found guilty of violating ethics after changing the election candidacy age requirement so that his nephew-in-law, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's first son, 36-year-old Gibran Rakabuming Raka, could run for vice president. The old requirement states that presidential or vice presidential candidates must be at least 40. However, in his verdict, Anwar added an exception to the age restriction for candidates who have been elected as regional leaders. Gibran, who serves as Mayor of Surakarta, Central Java, meets this requirement. It is not clear yet how the removal will affect Gibran's candidacy. In the 2024 presidential election, Gibran will run with ex-military general Prabowo Subianto, who holds the position of Defence Minister in Jokowi's current administration. Prabowo used to be Jokowi's nemesis in the previous two elections. The Conversation Indonesia invites scholars to publish their analyses and insights for our special election section.
