This month’s newsletter highlights include November proposal deadlines, effort reporting, international collaboration, important updates from federal agencies, upcoming workshops and much more exciting news. Announcements

November Proposal Deadlines

The Chapman University Office of Research & Graduate Education will be closed on Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.  Please note that proposals with sponsor deadlines during this time will require additional lead time. Consult the list below or our Proposal Preparation Timeline for final dates to submit the full draft of your application to Sponsored Projects Services (SPS) for review. The Cayuse SP proposal should also be routed and have received all unit approvals by these dates.

 

New Effort Reporting System (ERS) Now Live!

Chapman's new effort reporting system is now live and ready for PI certification! PI's required to certify for the 2023-2024 reporting round have received an email including the link to the system as well as training videos and materials. For more information visit our effort reporting resources page. Certifications are due Monday December 2nd. 

 

Opportunity for International Collaboration.

Are you interested in collaborating with a distinguished colleague working within a research team attached to the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France? Chapman University’s Scholar Exchange Program with CNRS offers a unique opportunity for two French scholars to join us in the Spring of 2026. This program provides funding and support for these scholars to engage in meaningful research and academic exchange at Chapman. Reach out to your French colleagues, discuss a collaborative project, and encourage them to apply.

Are you ready for NIH’s new ORCID Requirements for 2025?

All senior/key personnel listed on NIH applications due on/after May 25, 2025 will be required to have an ORCID ID. The ID must be linked to their eRA Commons profile and entered into the Persistent Identifier field of their Commons Forms (e.g., SciENcv Biographical Sketch and Other Support). ORCID is a free, unique, persistent identifier (PID) for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. Set up your ORCID today!

Early Stage Investigator Status Expiring Soon? Consider Requestion an Extension!

Did you know that NIH will consider requests to extend your ESI status for reasons such as childbirth, medical concerns, disability, family care responsibilities, natural disasters, active duty military service, and public health emergencies? If you’ve experienced delays in your research due to any of these reasons, consider submitting an exception request (no institutional review or approval is needed)!

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fellowships

Changes to the fellowship application and review process are coming for applications due on or after January 25, 2025. A recording of NIH’s webinar on the changes is now available. Many of the questions during the webinar dealt with the application changes and how candidates could start to prepare now. 

 

NIH Grant Coming to an End? Complete Closeout Correctly! 

Closing out an NIH grant involves both administrative and financial responsibilities to ensure compliance with NIH policies. Learn all about these requirements directly from NIH experts in the recording of their recent Navigating the NIH Grant Closeout Process webinar, or checkout this quick overview.

 

NIH Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) Reminders

RPPRs due on or after October 1, 2024, will have new questions asking NIH recipients for details on how they are adhering to their approved Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan, if applicable. Check out the full announcement and the new RPPR Instruction Guide.

 

Rethinking Race and Ethnicity in Biomedical Research

A new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine provides guidance to biomedical researchers on changing the way race and ethnicity are used in their work, outlining an approach that moves toward more thoughtful use of this data in research and clinical applications. 

 

News from The Nation Science Foundation (NSF)

  • With this Dear Colleague Letter, NSF invites existing awardees in selected clusters/programs/divisions within the Directorates for Biological Sciences (BIO) and Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) to explore the Use-Inspired Creativity Extension for the Bio-economy (UICREX-Bioeconomy) to extend funding for research awards that have the potential to be translated into commercial activities in the U.S. bio-economy.

Benefits of using DMPTool to Create your NIH Data Management & Sharing Plan

If you’re not using DMPTool to draft your DMS Plan, you’re probably spending too much time and not achieving the best possible results.  Use your Chapman email address for easy Single Sign-On (SSO) access, and get started using one of the sponsor-specific templates.  DMPTool provides example language and sponsor instructions, and allows you to add collaborators so you can create the DMS Plan together, comment with suggestions and feedback, and make edits before finalizing the Plan.
