Works progress on the Tidal River Visitor Centre precinct

A new welcome to Tidal River is coming. Construction is moving ahead on the visitor centre precinct at Victoria's most popular campsite.

The works are part of the Wilsons Promontory Revitalisation project. This is a $23 million plan to improve facilities and conservation work across the park.

Upgrades to the visitor centre precinct include:

  • a new façade
  • a small extension
  • interior improvements
  • new landscaping and outdoor paths
  • more picnic tables and seating in the surrounding precinct.

The project aims to make the visitor experience more accessible and sustainable. It builds on accessibility improvements to the Prom Wildlife Walk.

The renovated visitor centre will create a sense of arrival at the campground.

Works will also start soon at Tidal River to refurbish four toilet and shower blocks. A new Changing Places facility will also open, with a toilet, shower and changing area, featuring a hoist for full disability access.

The toilet upgrades are part of the Victoria’s Great Outdoors program. It includes a $106.6 million plan to improve campgrounds, walking trails, 4WD tracks and visitor facilities in Victoria’s parks and state forests.

The construction schedule aims to reduce visitor impacts. However, there may be some minor disruptions over the coming months.

Pipes and services have been laid through the precinct | Refitting services as the visitor centre is renovated

Construction update

Pipes and services have been laid through the area. Services are being refitted as the visitor centre is renovated.

“We are excited about the renovations at Tidal River. The renewed visitor centre will provide a more welcoming entry for visitors and will be better connected to the general store,” said Phil Price, Parks Victoria’s Southeastern Commercial Operations Manager

Works at the visitor centre precinct are expected to be complete by the end of 2025. During this time, the Visitor Centre has temporarily relocated 100m west, in the Education Centre. The campground remains open during construction.

You can follow the progress on the Prom Revitalisation project page.

Tidal River Footbridge closer to reopening

The Tidal River Footbridge is closer to reopening with repair works well underway.

With the decking removed, contractors require a small boat to secure the bridge.

Decking has been removed and the bridge structure secured. Engineers confirmed the metal beams supporting the bridge need replacing. This will take place over the coming months. We expect the bridge to reopen by the end of 2025.

Contractors chat with Parks Victoria’s Senior Project Manager.

Sealers Cove Boardwalk tender

Progress is being made to reopen the Sealers Cove Boardwalk. Following a competitive tender process, the project team are in the final stages of evaluation. We expect to appoint to contract shortly.

Construction is planned to start in spring 2025. Works depend on the weather and track access after recent rainfall.

Prom Sanctuary Fence tender

The tender to design and build the Prom Sanctuary Fence closed on 23 July. The project team will now carefully evaluate the bids. We expect to choose a contractor by late August, with construction start in summer.

Prom Sanctuary project

Recent invasive species control and habitat restoration works are laying strong foundations to protect and restore Wilsons Promontory National Park’s wildlife and ecosystems.

Prom Sanctuary Restoration Ecologist Brooke records her observations of a reference area in the northern section of the park following an ecological burn.

Following ecological burns on the Yanakie Isthmus, endangered Coastal Bitterbush are already showing signs of recovery in areas once dominated by invasive Coastal Teatree.

We’ve captured the first confirmed Lace Monitor images in decades. Tiny Eastern Pygmy Possums are regular visitors to bait stations. We’ve had many sightings of:

  • Long-nosed Bandicoots
  • Southern Brown Bandicoots
  • Long-nosed Potoroos
  • Lewin’s Rail
  • Rikali (or water rat - our native river otter equivalent)
  • Dusky Antechinus
  • White-footed Dunnarts
