Dear Student,

As exam time approaches, we know that is can be a challenging time for you and we want to support you. Below, you will find information on exam preparations, financial supports and careers. 

In the meantime, Student Services are working on a programme of exam supports based on your feedback from last week's survey - thanks to everyone who participated. We are listening. 

Read on for info on these resources and more.

Things to note this week: 

  • Exams - Keep an eye out for an ezine from the Exams Office due at the end of this week. You will get answers to many of your questions about exams (including timetables) and information on exam supports.  
     
  • General internet access has been restored on the Eduroam WiFi service. If you don’t already have the up-to-date Eduroam client installed on your device, click here to download and install it.  A step-by-step installation guide is available here also.
     
  • General internet access has also now been restored to the PCs in the PC Suites and in the Library & seats capacity has been increased to 1360 seats in the Library & 152 seats in the Reading Room. 
     
  • Want to get vaccinated? Pop into the HSE Pop-Up Vaccination Centre on the Main Concourse on Tuesday Nov 9th and Tuesday Nov 16th.

SEMESTER 1 - EXAM DATES 

EXAMS PREPARATION 

Semester 1 exams will run 6–17 December, and Student Services are planning a series of workshops for November to help you prepare for the exams with tips to take care of your health and wellbeing. 

Adhering to public health guidelines, you will be required to wear face coverings for the duration of the exam.

Exam Day

Please do not attend if: 

  • You are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms
  • You are a close contact of a Covid-19 case and are unvaccinated, or
  • You have been advised by a health professional to self-isolate or restrict your movements 

In such circumstances, you may request a deferral. More information about your exams and COVID-19 is contained in the email issued by the President today.

We will be running two repeat workshops for 'Building Resilience to Cope with Exam Stress'.

  • One on Wednesday, 16th November at 3:00pm and the other Thursday, 17th November at 3:00pm.
  • The venue will be the Common Room in the Chaplaincy Centre.

WHAT'S ON OFFER IN THE LIBRARY?

Useful library study resources  

Did you know that the Library offers a range of really useful and amazing training that you need right now? 

Topics include, An introduction to the Library, Getting started with Microsoft Word (also Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel), Avoiding Plagiarism, Conducting a Literature Review  and much more. Check it out and register for these events and  book appointments with the Academic Writing Centre here  

You can also pay a visit to the MakerSpace in the Library to learn how to 3D print, fly a drone, and more! Fun entry-level workshops and equipment bookings are available from the temporary online site.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT 

 Deadline for Laptop Loan Application is November 26th .

Coordinated by the Access Centre, you can find out if you are eligible to receive a laptop on long-term loan (for the duration of your studies with NUI Galway) by clicking here.

How to apply?
If eligible, complete the  Laptop Loan Scheme  application form.

Financial Aid Fund still open.

The following 2021/21 funds are open:  

  • Hardship / Emergency Fund (EU, including Ireland, and UK): Applies to all students who experience significant changes in their personal circumstances within the 12 months prior to application.  
  • Means-Tested Fund: For students on a household income of less than €43,380. Once the budget is exhausted, this fund will be closed for the year.

Don't forget to drop into the Student Enquiry Centre this week and get information on the above Laptop loan scheme and the Financial Aid Fund. Our team there are there to help you.

UniCoV

Project UniCoV is important. 

UniCoV study is a study aimed at developing and informing SARS-CoV-2 rapid testing and surveillance systems in higher education in the Republic of Ireland and to assist the return to campus activity.

Volunteers are still needed. Please help us protect our community and develop an early COVID-19 detection system.
