What's On March 2014

I went along to the Gibbston Valley concert where Lynyrd Skynyrd was the main act; me and 15,000 others! What an amazing experience to see these legends
of the rock world right here in our own backyard. There have been some awesome opportunities to enjoy great outdoor music in February and there are still more to come. It's beginning to feel like Autumn in Central now, thanks to a couple of light frosts which have made some trees decide to turn. So now we look forward to March's calmness, brilliance and supreme serenity bringing all things good - like the grape harvest, wine and food festivals, performance, music and exhibitions.
The Maniototo celebrated their Art Deco Festival last weekend which was called Decocade - because on Saturday the spectacular Cavalcade rode into town too – giving us a double dose of history. Along the wide main street of Ranfurly they rode, transforming the town into a scene from an old Western. I could not believe how many horses and travel weary Cavalcaders there were. And there was a splendid art exhibition in the Ranfurly Town Hall which had been curated with some very hard work by Denise McGirr and her team. A work each, by Ralph Hotere and Jeffrey Harris, added a touch of professionalism and were a drawcard for
many curious and keen viewers. The Alexandra Musical Society's 'Stars in your Eyes' opens in two weeks and has virtually sold out, which is very encouraging, but not entirely surprising given the amount of local talent we have. The Clyde Theatre group is presenting ‘Calendar Girls’ by Tim Firth which promises to be a real hoot!
