Naval Point – Te Nukutai o Tapoa Development Update

New play space now open

A ‘sinking ship’, monkey bars and dingy are all features of a new play space at Naval Point.

The Council worked with the Scouts to develop the plans. The play space is located next to the newly revamped Lyttelton Recreation Grounds, and has been created as part of the Council’s wider Naval Point Te Nukutai o Tapoa Redevelopment project.

Much of the play space was made using reclaimed wood donated by Lyttelton Port Company. Other historic features include refurbished wharf bollards, marine piles, and a ship’s propeller.

Naval Point redevelopment update

Lyttelton Recreation Grounds
The netball court was painted in November. The design has been created by Ngāti Wheke artist and carver Caine Tauwhare and complements the basketball/futsal court design that was completed last year.

With the new change facilities up and running, the old change pavilion will be removed in the coming months. Plans are also in the works for a community event to mark the completion of the project.

Magazine Bay jetty
Work is scheduled to start on revamping the Magazine Bay jetty around April, after the tender process wraps up.

Naval Point - western development
Planning for the next phase of the Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa redevelopment is underway. This will focus on upgrading the marine and waterside facilities in the western area of the site. Work will include revamping the public ramp and hand launch ramp. Consenting works are underway and will continue into 2026. A hearing to be scheduled once this process is complete.

Shared facilities
Alongside the Council’s work, Whakaraupō Recreation Inc (WRI) are developing plans for shared facilities, storage and space for 18 different sport and recreation clubs based at Naval Point.
