Over the past week, women have been speaking out about feeling unsafe on the street. The tragic death of Sarah Everard brought home some of their worst fears at a time when the freedom to take a walk alone is more precious than ever.
I asked a group of researchers what advice they could give to men who are thinking about how they can become more alert to their own conscious and unconscious behaviours to reduce fear for women. This is how they responded. It’s not about blaming or accusing anyone. It starts with talking and listening to the women in your own life. I actually learnt quite a lot from this article myself and will be using it in my own discussions with friends.
The upset was not helped by the actions of the police in Clapham this weekend, where people had gathered for a vigil in Everard’s memory. The question of protesting during lockdown is certainly a thorny one, but a legal perspective shows that more engagement from parliament over the past year might have averted the standoff between police and attendees.
Other essential reads today include interviews from Syria after a decade of war, and new research showing how bad people are at identifying the fish they eat.
