Extending Our Support and Stretch Initiative into Years 2 and 3. In 2025, Coolbinia Primary School introduced the Year 1 Support and Stretch Program with considerable success. This initiative has strengthened student outcomes in early literacy and numeracy through targeted small group instruction tailored to individual learning needs. Building on this success, I am pleased to advise that in 2026 we are expanding this approach to include our Year 2 and Year 3 students. The program provides short, focused sessions delivered in small groups, allowing teachers to respond precisely to each student’s current level of understanding. Sessions are closely aligned with classroom learning,
ensuring students can apply their skills immediately and experience success as learning progresses. Groups are flexible and reviewed regularly, ensuring that support and extension remain responsive to student progress. Teaching approaches remain engaging and interactive, supporting confidence, fluency, and a positive disposition towards learning. From 25 May, our Year 2 and 3 students will participate in this Support and Stretch Program, delivered by experienced teaching staff. The model will include rotating small groups, with a clear focus on reading fluency, spelling, and numeracy, alongside enrichment opportunities for students ready for deeper challenge. A key strength of the program is its design and delivery by our classroom teachers, enabling a highly responsive and personalised approach to teaching and learning. We will continue to support strong partnerships with families by providing practical resources and updates to assist learning at home. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring every student is supported, challenged, and confident in their learning journey. Room 7 Initiative Success Complementing this work, in 2026 we introduced a targeted literacy and numeracy program based in Room 7. This program provides an additional layer of support for students, offering focused teaching in a structured and supportive environment designed to foster confidence, engagement, and learning success. Students in this program work in carefully planned groupings, supported by a high staff-to-student ratio that enables targeted instruction, clear goal setting, and ongoing monitoring of progress. The program is designed not only to support academic growth but also to strengthen students’ broader development. The Room 7 program provides targeted learning support through: The students are thriving and demonstrate great progress! Supporting Strong Communication At our school, we value open, respectful and timely communication as a key part of supporting every child to feel happy, safe and ready to learn. We see communication as a shared partnership between home and school, where working together leads to the best outcomes for students. When You Have a Question or Concern Start with your child’s teacher – most matters can be resolved quickly through direct communication: Our goal is always to resolve concerns promptly, respectfully and fairly, ensuring all parties are heard and treated with dignity. Our Commitment to You • Fairness and respect for all involved Complaints can be made in a way that suits you: in person, by phone, by email or in writing. Support is always available to help you through the process. Working Together Matters School Communication Flowchart
Well done to the Year 6 students who performed two terrific items. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents for turning up to make the morning a real celebration. Congratulations to Ms Moon, Mr Degebrodt and Mr Joyce for their skills and creativity in helping the students perform something they will never forget.
Friendship: As children grow, they begin to understand that friendships can change. This may include friends moving away, disagreements, or missing someone important. These experiences are a normal part of growing up, but they can feel big and confusing. At home, open conversations can help children feel safe sharing their feelings. Reassuring them that it is okay to feel sad, disappointed, or unsure supports emotional awareness and confidence. Talking about kindness in friendships, such as listening, including others, and showing care helps children build positive relationships and notice when others may need support. With gentle guidance, children can develop empathy, resilience, and strong connections that support them through both the challenges and joys of friendship.
Coolbinia Primary School has a fantastic culture of active transport, and on Friday 22 May we are celebrating by walking to school and having some fun along the way! Everyone is welcome to join in. Whether you walk, ride, scoot, skate or even arrive by car, you can still take part by wearing some ridiculous footwear. As this coincides with our House Cross Country event, students are encouraged to show their school and house spirit with silly socks, loopy laces or fancy feet in house colours. Serious runners are welcome to bring a change of shoes for their event.
Kindy Green and Kindy Yellow had a beautiful morning last week celebrating their mums at our special Mother’s Day Morning. It was filled with love, laughter, and lots of fun, and we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. Thank you for the wonderful turnout and for creating a special memory for our kindy kids 🙂
