PhD candidate Isabella Reeves caught up with Flinders in Touch last month to talk about her research around the ecology and genomics of marine mammals, with a particular focus on killer whales. Her article in The Conversation was the most read article for the week (over 300,000 times!) and has been republished by media outlets all over the world. Congratulations to Flinders PhD candidate Marcio Da Silva has been named the 2023 best post-graduate student in South Australia by the Geospatial Council of Australia. Marcio will now compete for the national title, to be announced next year. PhD candidate Kathy Boschen spoke about palliative care guidelines in each state in an article and on-air story for ABC News. She also published a follow up article in The Conversation. Dr Amy Matthews, from the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, is the recipient of the 2023 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Supervision. Eligible students will be emailed information about graduation and will be required to register their attendance. If not conferred in time students will be invited to the April ceremony (with an exception made for international students). Domestic students who are only able to attend the December ceremony can contact the Graduation Office to discuss their circumstances. 2023 CBGL and CHASS HDR Spring ConferenceThe Spring Conference will be taking place next week on Tuesday 7 November. The event is designed to provide Higher Degree Research and Honours students with the opportunity to showcase research and innovations in a supportive environment, build presentation skills, participate in HDR milestones and connect with research scholars across colleges and disciplines. The Dean of Graduate Research, Professor Tim Cavagnaro will be a panellist in the afternoon session on 'Collaborating with Communities and Stakeholders and Co-Designing your Research for Impact'. Imposter Syndrome Workshop RecordingDid you miss the workshop on Imposter Syndrome? The session will explain why high performing people often doubt their abilities and find it hard to enjoy their successes. It will also show the links to perfectionism and self-handicapping strategies such as procrastination, avoidance and over commitment. Scholarship Opportunity for Masters StudentsThe John Crampton Travelling Scholarship provides an exciting opportunity for students who have completed an Honours or Masters by Research degree and are looking to study overseas in 2024. These scholarships are open to graduates from any Australian University and provide support towards a living allowance (up to $25,000 p.a.), tuition fees (up to $25,000 p.a.) and/or travel to their study destination for students studying Architecture, Engineering, Fine Arts (Music excluded) or Classical Antiquity. The Power of Visual Storytelling: How to Share your Research Through VideosThis training on Tuesday 21 November (10am, Library) will equip you with solid multi-media skills that enable proficient communication of your messages through the medium of video. Guided by Dr Tullio Rossi from Animate Your Science, participants will learn how to craft a compelling research narrative and produce engaging videos using simple and accessible software. Social Media for ResearchersSocial media can be an excellent tool for researchers to promote their research and share it with a wider audience. In this session, on Wednesday 8 November (10.30am online) Karen Ashford - Director, Media and Communications and Simone Palmrose, Social Media and Digital Marketing Coordinator will give an overview of different social media platforms and discuss how to harness social media to promote your research.
