Selected Upcoming EventsWednesday, June 7, 2023, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Spotlight On Our PeopleHyeoksu LeeGraduate Student, Mechanical and Civil Engineering I am a first year PhD student in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Prior to joining Caltech in 2022, I received my BS and MS degrees from Seoul National University, South Korea. My research interests focus on computational fluid dynamics to better understand flow physics and develop faster and more accurate models for multiphase flows. Currently, I work with Professor Tim Colonius to investigate cavitation phenomena in turbulent flows using numerical simulations. Cavitation can occur in a variety of industrial and medical applications including turbomachinery and lithotripsy. I would like to contribute to these fields by developing numerical methods to predict, control, and optimize flow structure. In my free time, I like watching movies, walking around the campus, and spending time with my friends. Joudi HajarGraduate Student, Electrical Engineering I’m a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering, and I joined Caltech as an EAS Chair Scholar. I’m humbled to be the inaugural recipient of the Elachi Fellowship, established in 2023 by the 8th Director of NASA JPL (2001-2016), Charles Elachi, and his wife Valerie. Before coming to the U.S., I completed an MSc in robotics and control at ETH Zurich, and a BE in ECE at the American University of Beirut. I enjoy researching optimal control theory and looking for cool applications in autonomous driving. As my advisor, Professor Hassibi, says: "control is like life; given your past, you take actions in the present and make decisions that influence the future, but... the future is unknown. What to do?" If you’re like me, you’d follow the regret-optimal control strategy, and you would design yourself as a partially memoryless system - your output matrix should be sparse! We'd like to feature you!FSRI: Seeking Summer Research MentorsThe First-Year Success Research Institute (FSRI) seeks mentors for Summer 2023. FSRI is designed to introduce incoming historically excluded and/or marginalized first-year students to Caltech's research, curriculum, academic rigor, and student support services. Mentors should have a project available for students and dedicate 2+ hours/week to in-person lab work and meetings with students. Dates of research: July 31 - September 8. View the Interest Application to learn more about the program details and timeline. Deadline: Open until filled with a priority deadline of end of June. Calls for Nomination & Funding OpportunitiesCaltech’s Office of Foundation Relations maintains an online database and email subscription service of primarily non-federal funding opportunities as a resource for the Caltech community. Opportunities include calls for proposals released by private foundations, public charities, associations, corporations, internal Caltech opportunities and federal limited opportunities. 2023 Senior Thesis Prize: Call for NominationsThis prize recognizes senior theses that exemplify research and the effective use of the scholarly record and has been awarded each year since its founding in 2010. Prize winners receive acknowledgment of their prize on their official transcript. The citation is accompanied by a $1200 honorarium and appears in the Commencement program.
