What's On in Central Otago - August

Entries have now closed for the prestigious Arts Gold Awards 2019. It was exciting to see a diverse range of submissions
coming through from artists all over New Zealand and we look forward to an engaging Finalists' Exhibition. The Arts Gold Awards Evening will be held on the 27th September, tickets for this event will be available to purchase from the 16th of August at Central Stories. The Finalists' Exhibition will be open to the public from the 28th September and judges Jim Geddes and Dick Frizzell will hold a Floor Talk in the exhibition space on Sunday the 29th. We would like to extend our
best wishes to all those who entered this year and remind you that finalist's will be notified toward the end of this week. Due to the success of previous National Poetry Day celebrations, the Arts Trust, Central Stories, Radio Central and the Poetry Party, are excited to announce our plans for 2019. During the lead up to National Poetry Day keep an eye out around the district for posters of poems written by New Zealand literary
legends. These posters have been kindly supplied to the Arts Trust by Phantom Billstickers and will be posted in places where people can stop, read and enjoy. From the 19th – 23rd of August Central Otago people are invited to contribute to a Giant Community Poem, take part in an Interactive Workshop and/ or come along to our main event, Take a Risk, Make a Poem, on Friday the 23rd at Central Stories. Radio Central will air poetry readings throughout the week and the Alexandra Library have organised several fun activities for all ages too. National Poetry Day is a great opportunity to discover local and international poets, promote the reading and writing of poetry and raise the
visibility of poetry in the media so get involved! More and more opportunities pop up in the Central Otago/ Queenstown Lakes for artists to get their work into the public arena. Queenstown Contemporary is a new initiative, established by a small collection of artists, to help support creativity in the region. They work with philanthropic individuals, businesses, developers, organisations and arts industry professionals to provide new places for artists and creatives to show work for locals to engage with. Their goal is to help encourage excellence in art, create further opportunities for artists and nurture the cultural health of our
community. Currently, thanks to the generous support of the developers of Five Mile Centre in Frankton, they occupy a large independent space where they can show art. The next exhibition in this space is scheduled to happen in September and submissions are now open for artists to apply to be a part of this. For further information, deadlines and contact details click HERE. Finally, a massive congratulations to Central Otago legends
Carolyn Laing, Debbie Paton and Ruth Arkless who have been selected as finalists in the 2019 World of Wearable Art competition. 108 finalist garments from 22 countries and regions are set to be on stage for this year’s WOW awards show season which will be held at Wellington's TSB Arena from September 26th until October 13th. Enjoy everything on offer this month in the arts in Central Otago.
