What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - July

'Snow Cloud' by Emilie Bean. A branch emerging from a snow cloud typifies winter – leafless trees, and a more monotone palette. The crinkle of snow underfoot matches the crinkle of the medium used – dried lunaria, or silver dollar. Grown from seed in the cutting garden in Arrowtown, 'Snow Cloud' puts these dried lunaria pods to use, not only showcasing our place at this time of year, but also the lifecycle of the plant, from seed, to bloom, to seed pod, to shimmering foils that glisten in winter. ainstakingly peeled, the seed pods shed their skin to showcase nature’s natural glitter and sheen. Arranged together in this 3D
installation, the snow cloud takes on a life of its own, capturing light and the ethereal winter glow. Last weekend Queenstown Art Society celebrated the opening of 'Winter Tale' - a captivating art exhibition that celebrates the visual stories and diverse narratives of local and regional artists. Arrowtown artist Emilie Bean was awarded the top prize with her stunning creation 'Snow Cloud'. Emilie is based in Arrowtown where her flower studio – The Arrowtown Flower Company is also situated. Emilie grows all her own flowers and sells them fresh throughout the growing season, from October to March. The Arrowtown Flower Company is underpinned by a philosophy that showcases seasonal blooms grown in a regenerative manner, for the local community. No blooms are flown in from warmer climes – she is unapologetic and passionate about her #grownnotflown ethos, which allows her to tell the story of seasonal flowers through her own luscious and intriguing locally grown flowers. In winter, when the cutting garden is tucked up waiting for spring to emerge, Emilie creates with flowers she has grown and dried herself,
enjoying working with the absolute full cycle of nature, from seed, to bloom, to harvest, to dry, to seed again. Waiata Theatre Productions Auditions. Waiata Theatre Productions is proud to announce that their 2025 production is… The Hunchback of Notre Dame Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score,
as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel. The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be 'Out There,' observes all of Paris revelling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her
free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the Roma – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all. A sweeping score and powerful story make The Hunchback of Notre Dame an instant classic. Audiences will be swept away by the magic of this truly unforgettable musical. Auditions will take place on the 18th and 19th of August 2024 at Earnscleugh Hall, Alexandra, with the season running from the 25th of April to the 18th of May 2025. Those eager to audition can book HERE. Cover to Cover 2024. Preparations are well underway for this year's Cover to Cover event.
