Principal’s Report

Celebrating our teachers on World Teachers’ Day
Today is World Teachers’ Day, and I want to tell our Subiaco families something about our teachers that you may not see from the school gate.

Teaching is a physically and emotionally demanding job. Our teachers are on their feet all day. They rarely sit still, moving between small groups, crouching beside individual children, checking understanding, redirecting, encouraging and responding to what each child needs in the moment. By the time the bell goes, they have given everything to their students.

And then, for our teachers, the work continues. They plan, prepare and assess in the evenings. Many are in their classrooms on weekends, and many more are working from home. This is a job you have to be passionate about to love, and our teachers are.

The Department of Education’s Teaching for Impact framework describes what effective teachers know. When I read it, I see our staff:

They know themselves. Our teachers reflect on their own backgrounds, values and beliefs, and use that understanding to respond to the diverse needs and experiences of every child in their class.

They know their students. They understand that every child comes with different cultural, linguistic and family backgrounds, and with their own strengths, interests and needs. They know how each child learns, and how to help them understand, remember and use what they have learned.

They know the curriculum. They know the content, skills and understandings students need to master at each stage, and they shape their teaching programs around what their students need next.

They know what works best. They draw on evidence-based teaching approaches, know which have the greatest impact, and check the impact of their choices on students’ wellbeing, engagement, progress and achievement.

I can honestly say that in all the schools I have led, I have never worked with a team quite like this one. The way our teachers collaborate is remarkable. They share ideas, learn from one another and back each other every day. Time and again, they put their hands up for extra responsibility. They come to me and ask whether I’m happy for them to run an activity before or after school, start a new extra-curricular initiative, or take on a leadership role in the school. They do this without extra pay and without extra time, simply because they want our school and our students to have the best opportunities we can offer.

I am immensely proud of the way this team works together, and I am grateful every day to lead it.

Thank you to our teachers, and to our education assistants and support staff, for all that you do.

To top off World Teacher’s Day, our staff were treated to the most amazing gourmet lunch today, and it was the biggest gift of appreciation we have experienced. We were all overwhelmed by the generosity of Christina Dismuke, our School Board Chair, who organised a Group Together and raised the funds to make this feast possible. Particular thanks go to Christina and her family, who provided the desserts and did all the preparation and setting up for an event to celebrate our teachers.

We would also like to thank the following wonderful Subi businesses: Wholefood Circus, who donated two enormous gourmet salads, Farmer Jack’s, who donated $50 towards the fruit and vegetables, and Filament Coffee, who donated the cold brew.

We are all very grateful.

Warm regards
Heather McNeil

Ride, Scoot or Walk to School Day

It was fantastic to see the large number of students and families using active transport to come to school on our Ride, Scoot or Walk to School Day. We had 70.4% of our students using active travel to get to school today.

This event was held as part of the Your Move program and coincided with WA Bike Month. Participants enjoyed the fresh produce kindly donated by Baker's Delight and Farmer Jacks.

Congratulations to our lucky winners of the raffle who chose from a fantastic selection of prizes generously donated by The Fast Lane Bike Shop, Sorganics, Subiaco PS Library and the Your Move Program. Thank you to everyone involved in making the event such a success. Click HERE for photos.

Lapathon and Food Stall

It has been a busy week for our Year 6 students. The highlight would have to be yesterday's highly successful Food Stall fundraiser. A first count by some of the students put the day's profit at $2144.80. This needs to be double checked before banking, but still speaks volumes for the generosity and support we receive from the families at Subi Primary. A special big THANK YOU to the Year 6 families for supplying such a great spread of food to sell!

Buddy Sessions

Thanks to the hard work and initiative of our SRC, our whole-school buddy sessions commenced this week! Students had the opportunity to interview their buddies and learn more about one another as they completed a buddy profile.

The profile, created by Mason F (U3), included questions about favourite things, places they have visited, weekend activities and personal strengths, helping students discover shared interests and learn something about their buddy.

The buddy sessions will take place in Weeks 3, 6 and 9 of Term 4 and aim to build positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging by connecting students from different year levels.

We hope that these sessions will encourage friendships, develop communication and social skills, as well as promote kindness, empathy and respect. They are also a great opportunity for older students to develop leadership qualities and responsibility while helping younger students build confidence and feel supported by others.

SJG Icy Pole Fundraising

The Social Justice Group is selling Icy Poles for $1.00 this term (to fundraise for our sister school in Cambodia). This will be on Fridays during lunch break (commencing 10:55am and finishing at 11:10am) for:

• Years 1-6 (Weeks 3 to 9, excluding Wk 5)
• Pre-primary (Weeks 4 & 8 only).

National Recycling Week - Join the Cycle - 9 to 15 of November

Since 1996, Planet Arc has been helping Aussies recycle by sharing knowledge, education, events and inspiring stories.

Over the past 30 years, the recycling rate in Australia has gone from 7% and just 1.5 million total tonnes recycled to over 60% and 43 million tonnes of materials recycled. Per person, that's recycling just 80kg of material yearly in 1996, to now about 1,700kg!

Join the Cycle in 2026 and keep reducing, reusing, repurposing, recycling and more at home and as part of your community.

For more information visit https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/nationalrecyclingweek/at-home/

Also don't forget the library is a drop off point for various items that can be recycled including batteries, mobile phones, light globes, glad wrap and ziplock bags, oral care items and 10c drink containers.

Uniform Shop News

As next week is the beginning of November, now is a good time to start thinking of your children's uniform requirements for Term One of 2027.

The majority of stock is instore now, so place your orders for all items needed and they will be delivered to your child's classroom promptly. Replenishing hats, polos, skorts and shorts in a larger size is a good option. Also, for the students entering Year Six there are ample polos in stock!

An essential item for Year One - Year Three students is a chair bag (for storing pencils, markers, etc) They are $15.

For the Kindy and Pre-primary children, all items needed are currently in stock. Remember it is worth buying 2 hats, as they are often misplaced! Most young children fit a Small 55cm hat or Medium 57cm hat. They are $15.00 each.

Avoid the long queues in January knowing you have purchased all your requirements for 2027.

Visit https://shop.subiprimarypc.com.au/ for online orders delivered to your child's classroom or attend the Uniform Shop on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8.30am to 10.30am.

I look forward to helping you instore and filling your online orders!

Warm regards
