News you need

It can be hard to know where to turn for news and trustworthy information these days. There has never been so much information, so easily accessed. But the usual filter to help us make sense of it – the media – is in crisis.

So far in 2023, around 3,300 journalists have been laid off from publications in the UK and North America alone, following 1,400 job losses in 2022. Under pressure, some publications turn to clickbait, or play to their increasingly polarised crowds by telling readers only what they think they want to hear – sometimes even when they know it’s not true.

A third of journalists said maintaining credibility as a trusted news source was one of their major challenges, a study by Cision found, while more than half felt the public had lost trust in the media over the previous 12 months.

A crisis in journalism creates problems for society. Poor quality information gives a poorer understanding of the world, and leads us to make worse decisions.
