Construction on track at Ōmōkihi

The worksite is humming with activity as Ōmōkihi starts to take shape.

We continue to make good progress with the rebuild, with the interior fit-out and installation of services coming along nicely. Landscaping and other exterior work has also picked up steam since our last update.

Behind the scenes, the Libraries team is busy planning the relocation from the temporary library at The Colombo shopping centre ahead of Ōmōkihi's reopening.

There are still a busy few months ahead of us, but we remain on track to welcome everyone back to Ōmōkihi before the end of the year.

The main entrance signage has been installed, and pathways are being constructed around the exterior. 

Moving inside, most of the ceiling panels are now in place, gib stopping is coming along, and flooring is starting to be laid. 

The café fit out is underway, with tiles and joinery in place. The flooring has also been laid and covered with a protective layer. The café will be run by Jan Kim and Jay Lee, who are co-owners of Café Elia on Ilam Road. A mix of cabinet food and made-to-order meals will be on offer. 

The café will open out onto a wraparound deck that overlooks the river and the spot where the South Christchurch Farmers' Market takes place on Sundays.

The photo above shows the staff area where the library team will keep things running smoothly behind the scenes. Details like window frosting for meeting rooms are starting to be installed in this area.

Here's a look at the new Auahatanga - Creative Space, which will house computers, sewing machines, printers and other gear for people to use. The flooring has been laid, and cabinetry is starting to arrive on site. This will be a great addition to the network of Auahatanga - Creative Spaces in Christchurch Libraries. 

Over the last fortnight, the Cook Brothers team has started creating the pathway that will run between the library and river, along Hunter Terrace. Asphalt will be laid in the coming weeks, and planting will follow as we head into spring. 

Finally, here's an aerial view of Ōmōkihi, looking toward the city centre. The roof is a busy area, with the last stages of service installation taking place.
