When we think of vikings, we tend to think of bearded men with battle axes pillaging Europe in the early Middle Ages – burning and looting settlements and making off with slaves and valuables. But this flies in the face of a lot of important archaeological work which has uncovered scores of viking encampments across Europe and found they were far more than merely defensive military structures.

Viking camps were far more likely to be fully functioning small townships, allowing a degree of agriculture and trade as well as an array of crafts. Their populations were often diverse and many camps were built to last.

It’s been a bad year for western Canada. A summer of heatwaves and wildfires has been followed by widespread autumn floods and landslides. Scientists call this a compound climate disaster, and they are likely to become more common in future. With this in mind, don’t miss the final episode of our climate conference podcast.

Finally, a new TV channel aimed at dogs has sparked a debate about how to keep your pooch from getting lonely when you are not at home.
