The new law states that the West Sumatra province will uphold Islamic values and teachings in its traditions and culture. This may mean West Sumatra will follow its neighbouring province located at the top of Sumatra island, Aceh, to become a province ruled by sharia law in the world's third-largest democracy. Under Aceh's sharia law, people violating Islamic rules could face public caning and flogging, which human rights activists have condemned as cruel and inhumane.
