What's on in Central Otago - November

Central Otago artist Maxine Williams has been directing the painting of a collection of four murals at the Thyme Festival this week. Over the past
month Maxine has held a series of art workshops in primary schools throughout the area as part of an Arts Trust initiative to encourage youth education, participation and development in the arts. Maxine has taught the history, design and practicalities of public art, and now the participating young people are painting their final designs. Throughout the week the community is invited to come down to Alexandra Community House, have a look, and even pick up a paintbrush to contribute to these four works. The Arts Trust and the Central Otago District Council are working together to install these works in public spaces around Central Otago soon. The Alexandra Thyme Festival opened on Saturday and will run until the 5th November. Pick up a pamphlet or click HERE to take a look at all the wonderful happenings around the themes of wellbeing, arts, craft and sustainability. Many of you will have heard the Dunedin School of Art will be offering a Bachelor of Visual Arts Programme from the Central Polytechnic Campus in Cromwell in 2018. The Bachelor of Visual Arts was previously only available to those
studying at the Dunedin School of Art however, from 2018, it will be possible to study the second and third-year painting and photography specialities by distance from Central Otago. The establishment of a tertiary art programme in Cromwell is indicative of a rapidly evolving arts world in Central Otago. It provides further opportunities for Central Otago artists, could attract our young people back to Central Otago to complete their tertiary studies, and may attract students into the area from further afield. Applications are open now. Further details about the Visual Arts Programme can be found HERE. The Cromwell Primary School Fair is on this weekend in Molyneux Ave. Central Otago artists have donated some beautiful works which are up for auction from 12.30 on Saturday - go along and take a look at what is on offer. Have a happy November!
