Adolescent girls face unique challenges in situations of violent conflict. Their experiences are often different from those of women, boys and younger children. However, in spite of their unique vulnerabilities, girls between the ages of 10 and 19 are often overlooked when programmes are being designed to support peace efforts. Based on interviews they did with adolescent girls in conflict-affected communities in South Sudan, Uganda, and Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon in the Lake Chad Basin, Katrina Lee-Koo and Eleanor Gordon provide insights into why this is counter-productive.

A number of new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have already been identified. It’s highly likely that there are others circulating that haven’t been detected yet by genomic surveillance, and that there will be additional new variants in the future. Two issues are causing global concern: will new variants cause more severe disease? And will they be more resistant to the COVID-19 vaccines coming onto the market? Ed Rybicki, Anna-Lise Williamson, Don Cowan and Stephanie G Burton unpack some of the basics about new variants and what to watch out for.
