Now Available: A New Guide of Timely Funding Streams For Farm to ECE Activities

A newly-released federal funding guide, Enhancing Young Children's Access to Local Foods and Farm to ECE: Federal Funding Opportunities, details 12 funding opportunities with the potential for over $650,000 for farm to early care and education (ECE) and local food access programs.

The 19-page guide was collaboratively developed by ASPHN, the Policy Equity Group, Food Research & Action Center (FRAC), and National Farm to School Network. It is designed to prepare and position farm to ECE partners within states, localities, government agencies, and community-based organizations to effectively apply for the grants.

"Despite the pandemic's profound impact on food and early care and education systems, these vital sectors are ripe with opportunity to build back with greater equity and resiliency," says Brittany Martens, ASPHN member and Farm to Colorado Specialist for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. "These grants and programs will help young children enjoy positive interactions with fruits, vegetables, and gardening, shaping healthy habits for life."

The funding streams within the guide are organized into three overlapping categories: food and agriculture, health and nutrition, and early care and education. An overview of each opportunity is presented in conjunction with quick facts (including active links to state contacts), strategies for action, and a timeline. Helpful examples of how states or localities have leveraged the funding for a range of farm to ECE activities are also included.

ASPHN encourages all states and localities to strengthen young children's access to local foods through these timely federal funding opportunities.
