Spotlight On Our People

Simon Mahler

Simon Mahler

Postdoctoral Scholar, Electrical Engineering

Hi, there! I’ve been a postdoctoral scholar in the Biophotonics lab in EE since January 2022, hailing all the way from Marseille, France. Having completed my doctoral studies in nonlinear optics (couped lasers) at the Weizmann Institute of Science, I felt compelled to expand my horizons and immerse myself in a biomedical engineering research environment. I am currently developing a multi-channel helmet, based on infrared laser speckle imaging, to non-invasively monitor the cerebral blood flow at different location of the brain simultaneously. By leveraging this technology, we can potentially advance medical applications, such as the diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries like concussions. Being a postdoc at Caltech has been a rewarding experience, made especially immersive since I am part of the Caltech Postdoctoral Association, where I have gained valuable insights on the campus, explored the available resources, and engaged with the vibrant postdoc community at Caltech.

Marianne Aellen

Postdoctoral Scholar, Applied Physics and Materials Science

Hi! I joined the Atwater research group in May 2022 as a postdoctoral scholar. My research focuses on the structural stability of laser-propelled lightsails. These lightsails will be accelerated to 20% of speed of light, which will allow us to send a space probe to our closest neighboring star, Proxima Centauri. Before I joined Caltech, I completed my doctoral studies at ETH Zurich working on plasmonic lasers. These lasers use light that is tightly confined to a metal, which allows them to be much smaller than conventional lasers. I am also involved with the Caltech Postdoctoral Association, where I interact with many other postdocs. Besides academics, I have a passion for sports. Join a lesson at the Caltech Badminton Club, where I coach. If I am not on campus, I am probably at the beach with the Caltech Surf and Windsurf Club or on a bike ride with the Caltech Tri Club.

We'd like to feature you!
