Creating Inclusive, Joyful Classrooms at Coolbinia Primary

Our Focus:
Building calm, predictable routines that support all learners, including neurodivergent students, while protecting teacher autonomy and nurturing curiosity-driven learning.

What It Looks Like

Threshold

Teachers greet students at the door with warmth and positivity.

Safety Line

Clear expectations for movement and behaviour during transitions.

SHELL

Sit up, Hands visible, Eyes on speaker, Listen, Lean forward.

Why It Works

Builds strong relationships and sets a welcoming tone.

Creates security and maximises learning time.

Encourages active listening and respect.

Inclusive Supports

  • Visual cues for routines and expectations
  • Sensory breaks and flexible movement options
  • Alternative seating for comfort and focus
  • Adapted expectations to meet individual needs

Our approach isn’t about rigid compliance it’s about consistent, flexible routines that help every child feel safe, included, and ready to learn.

Evidence of a Joyful, Inclusive Environment
Student survey results show classrooms that are calm and supportive. Students feel safe (3.98), included (4.11), listened to (4.0), and encouraged to learn (4.44). Motivation is high (4.64), while reports of bullying remain low. These results affirm that flexible routines support curiosity and joy.

Student Feedback Shapes Our Practice
Our students recently shared their thoughts on strategies that help create a calm, focused, and welcoming learning environment. One strategy they highlighted is SHELL – Sit up, Hands together, Ears listening, Look and Learn. Students explained that SHELL helps everyone stop, look, and listen quickly. They love that it makes learning smoother and reduces distractions, creating a more positive classroom experience for everyone.

“SHELL is an educational tactic used to grab kids’ attention, as well as their eyes and ears.”
“It stands for Sit up straight, Hands together, Ears listening, Look, ready to Learn.”

Impact:
Students feel SHELL has improved attention and behaviour, making lessons more productive and enjoyable.

“I think SHELL has made us become better learners and helped the teachers get our attention, keeping us focused for longer.”

Safety Line
This simple routine, lining up in alphabetical order, was introduced to keep transitions safe and organized.

“It’s easy to see who’s not here and who is here; it’s also easy to count us when we’re going on excursions.”
“The Safety Line has made it much easier to move around the school in an orderly way.”

Impact:
It is making movement around the school calmer and more efficient, especially during excursions and emergency drills.

Threshold
Greeting students at the classroom door is a small gesture with a big impact.

“Threshold makes people feel included and welcomed at the start of the day.”
“Lots of students have come out of their comfort zone because of Threshold.”

Impact:
Threshold builds positive relationships and sets a friendly tone for the day.

“It shows the students the teachers care and are dedicated to their education and learning progression.”

Why This Matters
These strategies reflect our commitment to high expectations and strong relationships. Student feedback shows they value routines that help them feel safe, respected, and ready to learn.

Next Steps:
We will continue refining these practices and inviting student voice to guide improvements, because when students feel heard, schools thrive!

Give your child the opportunity to succeed

We are committed to helping children succeed in school. As part of this commitment, we coordinate a number of financial scholarships, grants and prizes for young people in secondary school so they can focus on achieving their education goals.

Applications for most of our scholarships open in mid-October each year and close in the third week of December. The selection process starts in February of the following year and finishes in April. Families are informed of the outcome of their application soon after this.

For more information on how to apply, please find the information below. Further enquiries can be made through contacting:

  • Secondary schooling scholarships are open to students who have Australian citizenship or permanent resident status.
  • In most cases your child must attend a public school to receive one of our scholarships.
  • Each scholarship has different eligibility requirements. These are detailed on the online application form.
  • Depending on the individual scholarship, applications are accepted for students who are currently in Years 6 to 11 and will be attending secondary school the following year.

Coolbinia Primary School's Habitat for Wildlife Project at Perth Zoo

On Friday, November 21st, four students from Coolbinia Primary School Lukas, Gabriella, Ivy, and Isabelle along with Mrs. Dillon and Dr. Elaine Lewis, attended the Perth Zoo to present their findings from the Habitat for Wildlife program. All students who participated in the project contributed to the creation of the PowerPoint presentation, collaborating to share their knowledge and ensure a collective understanding of their work. The students shared their experiences, insights, and challenges encountered throughout the project, as well as the connections they made along the way. Lukas, Gabriella, Ivy, and Isabelle did an outstanding job representing the school, presenting their work to the other participating schools, and showcasing the importance of conservation efforts. Their hard work and teamwork were evident as they presented with confidence and enthusiasm.

Stem Buddy Event

Our Year 2 and Year 4 students came together today for a fun and engaging STEM Buddy event! Working in pairs, the children explored hands-on challenges, shared ideas, and learned from each other. It was wonderful to see teamwork, creativity, and curiosity shine as the older buddies supported the younger ones. A great day of building, experimenting, and discovering!
