News from the College of Business, Government & Law

We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga.

Welcome to the December edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter for 2022.

Our final newsletter for 2022 features some major research successes: an ARC Centre for Excellence on Plants 4 Space, 4 ARC grants (3 based at Flinders) and 4 new research funding awards from public and private agencies. It also features stories on major educational initiatives, including our undergraduate criminology degree, new articulation arrangements into our Health Care Administration courses, and the development of a new suite of applications by our law students to enhance access to legal support and justice. Congratulations to the teams responsible for these successes.

As the year comes to an end, the College can take satisfaction in some outstanding achievements in 2022. Our research income has more than doubled, from $2.8M in 2021 to $6.2M in 2022. Our international commencing student load (EFTSL) has almost tripled, from 57 to 161. Our commencing student load (EFTSL) for the relaunched MBA suite has increased sixfold, from 11 to 75. We have also developed a comprehensive suite of new educational offerings, which are mission-led and ready to launch. Congratulations to everyone responsible for these significant achievements, which provide a mighty platform for 2023.

Kind regards,
Michael

Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean

Plants for Space

The ARC Centre for Excellence in Plants for Space will grow space food expertise - and Flinders is hosting its own node

What food will space explorers of the future have access to? And what might a Mars living environment look like? Those are some of the questions that a new research centre, the ARC Centre for Excellence in Plants in Space, will explore.

Flinders will host its own node, and BGL's Professor Melissa de Zwart is the
Plants for Space Deputy Director and Processes program lead.

“By training more than 400 researchers, P4S will produce the next generation of internationally connected and industry-focused experts,"
says Melissa. "[It will also] accelerate the growth of the burgeoning national and international CEA and biomanufacturing industries."

Congratulations on Living the College Mission, Melissa!

Dr Melissa de Vel-Palumbo has been awarded this month for 'Living the College Mission'

With her Criminology colleagues, Melissa is redesigning the Bachelor of Criminology - introducing two new specialisations that allow for social impact both within and beyond the crime-technology nexus

“One key change was to introduce two new specialisations to the program – one in cybersecurity and one in innovation," she says.

"These specialisations involve students taking additional topics in computer science or innovation to fill their electives in the course. These specialisations will provide students with key industry-relevant knowledge and skills that they will need to address the emerging threat of cybercrime as well as helping them develop flexible and adaptable skills so that they can respond to old problems in new ways - or respond to problems we don’t even know exist yet."
