What is Food Safety?

Element 2.1.2 Health practices and procedures
Effective illness and injury management and hygiene practices are promoted and implemented.

Food safety is the handling, preparing and storing of food to reduce the risk of becoming sick from foodborne illnesses. Unfortunately, 1 in 5 people will get a foodborne illness each year, with bacteria being the leading cause in most cases and usually arising from improper handling, storage or food preparation.

Any person handling food, whether part of your job or cooking at home, should follow good food safety practices to prevent food from becoming contaminated and causing food poisoning. This includes food-related practices such as food handling, preparing, storage, heating and serving, food gardens, food experiences and cleaning food areas and equipment.

Food Safety Checklist

Do you conduct internal audits on food safety procedures at your service? There are a range of critical activities that need to be completed when it comes to food safety, such as during food purchasing, storage and preparation, as well as cleaning, equipment maintenance and pest control, to name a few. Click on the button to download a food safety checklist.

Potentially Hazardous Foods

Element 2.1.2 Health practices and procedures
Effective illness and injury management and hygiene practices are promoted and implemented.

Potentially hazardous foods (PHF) must be kept under temperature control to prevent the growth of bacteria to unsafe levels. They are generally moist, nutrient-rich foods with a neutral pH. Care needs to be taken when handling these foods. Click on the button to find out which foods are 'potentially hazardous'.

Supporting Your Immune System

Element 2.1.2 Health practices and procedures
Effective illness and injury management and hygiene practices are promoted and implemented.

Children are still developing their immune systems and cannot fight off infection as well as adults. The best way to protect ourselves and children from infections such as colds is to follow good hygiene practices and to have a healthy lifestyle, which includes:

  • Eating a healthy, nutrient-rich diet
  • Enjoying active play or physical exercise
  • Getting adequate sleep
  • Drinking plenty of fluids

Good hygiene helps protect yourself and those in your care from illness because it helps prevent getting or spreading germs. The germs that cause many diseases can be passed on through touching other people, handling contaminated food or coming into contact with dirty surfaces or objects. Also, in OSHC settings, the larger the number of children being fed, the greater the risk because it is more difficult to handle larger quantities of food safely.

National Child Protection Week

National Child Protection Week (4-10 September) is an annual event. This year’s theme ‘Every child, in every community, needs a fair go’ aims to spread the message that we need to work together to make sure that every child grows up safe and supported.

Visit www.napcan.org.au to get involved.

R U OK? Day

R U OK? is a harm prevention charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives.

This year, R U OK? Day is on Thursday 8th September. It’s a national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask “are you OK?” if someone in your world is struggling with life’s ups and downs.
