We are now beginning to enjoy longer days and the beauty of springtime as the seasons slowly morph from one to another. Outdoor activities will soon be available to book on our website. These events may be subject to change because the weather has been very changeable this year. We all know from years gone by that we could still have a return of cold weather in the next couple of months. Please keep an eye on the website for updates. I would like to thank Sabine Kussmaul and her students for their wonderful exhibition of life drawings. I am always in awe of the incredible talent of our artists and craftspeople. The community café provision has continued to develop and we are very grateful for your patronage. The café staff really enjoy seeing their ‘regulars’. We are currently compiling our programme of courses and other activities which will commence this autumn; if you are a qualified teacher and would like to teach or you are an enthusiast and would like to start a club, please contact Ali Woodburn with your ideas: charitysupport@guildlifelonglearning.org With best wishes for the half-term break, Paula Riordan Exciting Fundraising NewsWe have been chosen to receive a grant from CVS in partnership with Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance.CVS and Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance are working together to raise cancer awareness. Locally, CVS Cheshire East have secured funding to support the fabulous work voluntary and charity groups do to inform and educate their community. This fund seeks to improve community awareness of cancer, early signs and symptoms and screening uptakes across Cheshire east. It was wonderful to engage with Lucy and hear more about what the Guild can do to support their initiatives. To quote Lucy, “Don’t ignore something that isn’t normal for you”. What a fab tag line! We pledge to support our teaching staff, volunteers and participants to talk more openly about cancer in our setting though our activities and in our community cafe setting. Simply having conversations about health promotion could reduce the stigma and discrimination relating to cancer diagnosis. Improved earlier presentation of cancer symptoms at the GP’s will save lives. Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance are committed to help improve cancer treatment and care for people across Merseyside and Cheshire. Bringing together organisations, patients and others affected by cancer to drive improvements in clinical outcomes and patients’ experience of the care and treatment they receive. “Our long term ambition is to take every opportunity to prevent cancer and ensure outstanding cancer care is provided across Cheshire and Merseyside.” If you or someone close to you have been affected by cancer and you’ve got questions, it is easy to call our Cancer Research UK (CRUK) nurses on Freephone 0808 800 4040

NEWS: Friends of Lindow MossOn Saturday 3rd February our local community came together to discuss the future of the moss, the renovation and what they would like to see happen to our treasured peat bogs. The event also marked the official launch of the Friends of Lindow Moss - a new group dedicated to the protection of this historically and ecologically important landscape at the edge of Wilmslow. Groups involved are quite rightly using this important anniversary year to try and boost the profile and raise awareness. There will be a series of events taking place to encourage people to discover this beautiful site, but also understand the importance and value of it. Government understands how important Lindow Moss is and is fully committed to addressing peat degradation. While Lindow Moss is our local treasure – we all know restoration is vital for the UK – and I will keep raising the issue and doing everything I can to support those involved in protecting this much-loved treasure. - Ester McVey Article quote Knutsford Guardian Tatton MP welcomes £100k investment for Lindow Moss To find out more and join the Discover Lindow mailing list click HERE

Practical Identification Of Sphagnum workshop 9 March 10am to 1pm FREE to attend This event has been organized by Simon Caporn on behalf of the newly formed Friends of Lindow Moss group. The class will focus on the bog-building Sphagnum moss but will start with a presentation about the world of mosses and liverworts and how we can identify and name these tiny plants. After the theory, we will move to hands-on examination of a range of fresh specimens and learn how to distinguish species of Sphagnum moss from each other and from other mosses and liverworts. After a lunch break, there will be an optional short walk, for those who would like to join us, to Lindow Common to see these plants in the field. Without sphagnum moss there would be no Lindow Moss!
