FROM THE COLLECTIONVase, c. 1880 When Linthorpe Pottery began, the owner hired Christopher Dresser, an influential Victorian designer and author, to oversee the artistic output of the pottery. In Dresser’s Principles of Decorative Design (1873) he discussed his design philosophy for clay saying, “let us work the material in a simple and befitting manner, and satisfactory results are almost sure to accrue.” He described his distaste for clay objects that look like things other than what they are, including his creamer in the shape of a cow which he called “wretched and coarse.” This vase is the epitome of Dresser’s design aesthetic. Its simple shape shows off the beauty of the material, and the glaze elevates the piece to a work of art. |
