From the Principal

Footy Fever Hits the Front Office!
Students brought along their gold coin donations, which will go directly towards purchasing items to fill Care Bags for children in our community.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a footy-themed day without a little friendly rivalry! The front office was buzzing this morning as Mr Ramsey (Geelong Cats) and Mrs Hindmarsh (Fremantle Dockers) faced off in true AFL spirit. The banter started early and shows no sign of slowing down!
Meanwhile, I proudly turned up in my bright blue West Coast Eagles jacket… only to be pushed out of the official photo! Perhaps it’s fair to say that it’s just not our year!
It was wonderful to see so many students and staff getting into the team spirit while supporting such an important cause.

Athletics Carnivals
We were blessed with two glorious days of sunshine to hold our Senior and Junior Athletics Carnivals. On Thursday, our school oval came alive with energy, excitement, and a sea of faction colours. Across both carnivals, students from Year 1 to Year 6 showcased not only their athletic skills, but also their sportsmanship, determination, and encouragement of one another. Whether winning or losing, every child gave their best effort, cheered loudly, and showed the resilience and heart that truly matter more than medals. Congratulations to every student who participated.

A special shout out must go to our Year 6 students. On both days, they worked alongside Mr Clancy and Mr Egan to set up, and they played countless important roles supporting the junior carnival in particular. Their leadership and willingness to help made a big difference.

Of course, events like these don’t just happen. A huge thank you goes to Mr Ashley Clancy and Mr Brendan Egan for their many hours of preparation, ensuring every student was ready and allocated to an event. Thank you also to our dedicated staff who worked with them to keep everything running smoothly and make sure the students had a fantastic experience.

As the saying goes, it takes a village. Our school is renowned for its community spirit, and once again, this was on display. Without the support of our parents and our wonderful P&C, we would not be the vibrant, connected school that we are today.

Education Assistant Appreciation Week
This week, we celebrated our amazing team of education assistants who work across
the school, supporting our youngest students in early childhood classrooms, our English as an Additional Language program, learning support and our students with additional needs. We are so grateful for the work they do and are a valuable part of our school community. I hope you will join us in showing your appreciation for the education
assistants that may be supporting your child or classroom. Thank you EAs, you are just
incredible!

Open Night
Open Nights are one of the highlights of our school year. They offer families the chance to step into the classroom, sit alongside their child, and see learning from their perspective.
For students, it’s an opportunity to take pride in their work, share their thinking, and celebrate their progress. For parents, it provides insight into the activities, approaches, and creativity that shape learning each day.
Most importantly, Open Night strengthens the connection between students, families, and teachers. Understanding the “how” and “why” behind classroom learning allows you to support your child in meaningful ways.

On Wednesday 24 September from 3:30pm–5:00pm, we invite you to visit your child’s classroom. Your child will be your guide, showcasing a range of learning areas and sharing work from our specialist programs. You are welcome to arrive anytime after 3:30pm, with the last entry at 4:45pm to allow teachers to close at 5:00pm.
We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating the learning journey together.

Student Safety After School Hours
We would like to remind all families of an important safety matter regarding after-school supervision. Our school grounds are not supervised once the school day ends, and staff no longer have a duty of care. For this reason, children must be collected promptly and should not be left on school grounds without a parent or caregiver present. To help support families with timely departures, we introduced an additional siren at 3:30 pm to signal the end of the school day to gently remind everyone to leave the school grounds.

Recently, there have been several incidents in our local area that highlight why this rule is so important. Police attended twice in the past week due to individuals in the vicinity allegedly affected by drugs or alcohol. Once in Rankin Gardens near a Year 1 classroom, and once on Bagot Road near the Subiaco Arts Centre grounds. While our students were never in danger, these events serve as a reminder that our school is located in a busy inner-city area where unpredictable behaviour from members of the public can occur.

Please be assured that during school hours, your children’s safety is our highest priority. Our staff are trained to act swiftly in any situation, and we maintain a vigilant and proactive approach to keep all students secure. We thank all families for helping us maintain a safe school community and for continuing to collect children promptly at the end of the school day. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Exciting Invitation: Hale School Digital Wellbeing Symposium
I am deeply honoured to share that I have been invited to attend the cross-sector Symposium on ‘Student Use of Social Media and Mobile Devices: Policy and Practice to Support Learning and Wellbeing’ at Hale School on Wednesday 17 September which will be addressed by the Hon Sabine Winton MLA, Minister for Education; Early Childhood. I have also been invited to join a Heads of School Panel discussion. It is a real privilege to represent Subiaco Primary and share our experiences in supporting students’ safe and responsible use of technology.

This invitation reflects the fantastic work of our school community. Thanks to the leadership of SPS Board Chair Hannah McKelvie and Associate Principal Alan Ramsey, our Wait Mate initiative has received 165 pledges – the highest in WA. Digital wellbeing is now embedded across our school, from the School Board’s Wellbeing Subcommittee to our P&C HealthyHub, and we actively engage families through surveys, WhatsApp groups, and community partnerships.

I am excited to learn from the insights and experiences of the outstanding leaders and key stakeholders and applying this to strengthen our support for student wellbeing in a digitally connected world.

Playground Upgrades – Keeping Everyone Safe
We’re excited that work is about to begin on upgrading our playgrounds. The Senior Playground has been fenced and work will commence on Monday 8 September. The Junior Playground temporary fencing will be installed on Friday 7 November, with work starting the Monday 10 November. To give space for vehicles and equipment, the fencing will extend a little way onto the oval.

During this time, we all play a part in keeping our school safe. Please remind your children that fenced areas are out of bounds and take care when moving near the work zones. Staff will guide students on safe routes and routines, and we ask for your support in reinforcing these messages at home. Together, we can ensure the upgrades run smoothly and safely, and soon our students will have fantastic new play spaces to explore and enjoy.

Happy Father’s Day!
Finally, a special reminder that this Sunday we celebrate all the amazing dads, grandfathers, and father figures in our lives. We hope your day is filled with love, laughter, and special moments with your family. Happy Father’s Day to all!

Warm regards,
Heather McNeil

State Cross Country Achievement

We are very proud to share that one of our Year 4 students Chloe W-M (M3) recently represented Western Australia at the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships in Queensland. Competing against the best young runners from across the country, she showed outstanding determination and resilience, doing both herself and our school community proud.

Congratulations on this incredible achievement — what a fantastic effort!

Athletics Carnival 2025

What a magical day we had at this year’s Senior Athletics Carnival! From start to finish, the oval was filled with energy, determination, and plenty of smiles, laughs, and even a little dancing.

The week began on Thursday with the long jump, throws, and middle-distance events, which were a huge success. These competitions really set the scene and got the students prepped and excited for the big day on Friday.

The carnival itself jumped out of the gates with the sprints, where students showed incredible speed. We then moved onto our team games which highlighted the value of teamwork, before the afternoon relays brought the whole school together. The Year 1 and and 2 students joined in for the year level relays, and the excitement built towards the much-anticipated Grand Relay. This is always a highlight of the carnival calendar.

Congratulations to Julius, who were crowned overall champions on the day! Llewellyn claimed second place, and Klein finished in third.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our parents and families who came along to cheer and support. Your encouragement made the day even more special for the students. A big shout out also to our amazing teaching staff for their hard work in preparing, setting up, and running the carnival, their efforts ensured the day was such a success.

We also celebrated outstanding individual performances with our Year Level Champions and Runners-Up. Congratulations to these students for their achievements! Click HERE for photos.

Uniform Shop News

It is a pleasure to see the children running and playing in the sunshine!
Now is the time to look at refreshing polos, skorts and shorts for the warmer days to come. It is also a good time to check on your child’s hat as the “No Hat No Play” rule applies to keep your child safe from sunburn. It is a good idea to have a second hat as they often are lost and never seen again!

The preloved rack is a great source of school uniform items at very low prices. Currently I am seeking dresses, skorts (in larger sizes) and gold polos in good condition as the supply is low! If your child has outgrown uniforms and they are without stains or tears I would appreciate you donating them so another child can enjoy wearing them.

Please visit the Uniform Shop on Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 8.30am till 10.30am or order online at shop.subiprimarypc.com.au and I will deliver the items to your child’s classroom promptly.

Household Hazardous Waste

Explosive, corrosive or toxic materials pose a health risk to you, your pets, our waste collectors and the environment and need to be taken to your nearest Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility for safe disposal.

This includes items like:

  • aerosol cans
  • paint
  • batteries
  • compact fluorescent lights and tubes

The good news is that the West Metro Recycling Centre is a permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility, so you can drop off a range of items for free. Click HERE to see the accepted items list and note that there is a 20kg or 20L per material type per person limit, per visit.

Asbestos is classified as dangerous goods and is not covered by the HHW drop-off scheme, however it can be disposed of at the WMRC for a small fee.
