NCIP's 20th Anniversary Celebration

On December 9, 2021, NCIP celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a program featuring four wrongfully convicted clients–Arturo Jimenez, Jeremy Puckett, Clifton Jones, and Juan Bautista–who were freed in the midst of the pandemic. Watch the event below moderated by NCIP Executive Director and Co-Founder Linda Starr and exoneree Obie Anthony. 

 
 

Legal News

In 2008, Kevin Harper was wrongfully convicted of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse based on the faulty forensic science Shaken Baby Syndrome. On January 21, 2022, Kevin was released from prison after 13 years of wrongful incarceration.

On March 25, 2022, NCIP will be hosting a panel at the Santa Clara High Tech Law Journal symposium entitled "The Secret Code: Balancing defendants' rights with proprietary interests in forensic analysis." In this panel, we will explore whether criminal defendants should have access the source code of programs used to
analyze forensic evidence.

#MakingChanges
NCIP celebrated Wrongful Conviction Day on October 2, 2021, by launching an initiative called #MakingChanges. As part of the project, NCIP staff and volunteers surveyed more than 150 people to get their thoughts on four critical areas related to innocence work: Exoneration, Compensation, Re-entry Assistance, and Racial Justice.

Welcome Sarah Pace
In January, NCIP welcomed Staff Attorney Sarah Pace to the NCIP team. Sarah joins NCIP after a clerkship with the Honorable Laurel Beeler of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Francisco Division. She received her J.D. from the UC Berkeley School of Law with a certificate in Public Interest.
