Yikes! How can Spring 2018 advising be just a few weeks away?
Didn't the Fall semester just begin?

October 11, 2017

While it may feel like the semester has just started, we are actually well on our way to preparing for the Spring 2018 semester. The advising period will begin later this month and online registration opens in mid-November.

Later this month, we will be launching an updated version of Student Planning that will give you more of the features you have requested. These enhancements include:

  • Access to the Course Catalog through the Student Planning home page instead of having to access it from within an individual student's advising record
  • An advanced Course Catalog search function
  • Course titles will now display when you look at your advisee's planned or registered schedule in the calendar view
  • The ability to view your Advisee’s grades and credits for current and past semesters
  • Access to the degree audit from each Advisee's Student Planning page
  • A better overall look and feel
  • An “email all students” function in your class roster

Over the next few weeks INSIGHTS will begin introducing these enhanced features that await you – so watch for future emails. In addition, we will be updating the Instruction Manual for Advising & Registration with new information and screenshots.

In the meantime, though, here are the important dates to help you as you prepare to meet with your Advisees and guide them through the upcoming advising and registration process.

Monday, Oct. 23
Student Planning opens for students to begin planning their spring class schedules.

Saturday, Oct. 28 - Sunday, Oct. 29
The updated version of Student Planning goes live. There will be a period of time during this weekend that Student Planning will not be available to students or advisers.  Students will be notified in advance that the system will be unavailable during this time.

Monday, Oct. 30
Begin meeting with your Advisees and granting them “Permission to Register” in WebAdvisor. Need a refresher on how the “Permission to Register” process works? Visit:  "How to view your Advisees’ course selections and grant permission for their initial registration."

Monday, Nov. 13
Registration appointments for Barnard and CU undergraduates begin. Remember that students are assigned registration appointments based on seniority so if possible, meet with juniors and seniors first, then begin advising sophomores and first-years.

How to advise students who missed the Drop deadline

The last day for students to drop a class and have it completely removed from their transcript was yesterday, Tuesday, Oct. 10.

If you hear from Advisees who missed this deadline and still want to remove a class from their schedule, here's what they need to do.

1. They may still withdraw from a class, but it will remain on their transcript with a W (W deadline is Nov. 16 at 4:30 p.m.).  Have them meet with you if they would like to discuss this option.

2. If the students feel they have extremely extenuating circumstances that caused them to miss the deadline, advise them to meet with their class dean to discuss the possibility of petitioning for a late drop.
