What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - April

Image from Netflix - The Power of the Dog at The Bannockburn Sluicing’s
The Power of the Dog has attracted plenty of international media attention recently - being nominated for 12 Oscars across a range of categories. Scenes from this movie were filmed in Central Otago locations including the Maniototo and Bannockburn. The dry, barren nature of the Bannockburn Sluicing’s, the dust, schist and weathered land formations and the wide-open spaces of the Maniototo, the sky and rolling ranges of the Hawkduns feature heavily in the film. It is easy to imagine visitors could be drawn to the region off the back of these scenes and The Power of the Dog adds to the notion that Central Otago is a place from which world
class artists draw inspiration. Central inspires art - be it film, poems, painting and more. It is easy to take this landscape for granted but when films such as Power of the Dog receive accolades, it is an excellent reminder that we live in a special part of the world. Currently showing at Eade Gallery is 'Reflections' by Gretl Barzotto. Showing at Hullabaloo is 'Microcosm' by Gail de Jong. 'The Museum through Artists Eyes' is on at The Clyde Museum and The Black Rabbit Cafe have works by Jessica Garland on display. Remember to get out and support local businesses, buy art, attend shows, and visit artists’ studios and galleries across the district this Easter weekend. Arts Central will be holding ACE ’22 - a
showcase of visual artworks created in the Cromwell Basin and surrounding areas. The exhibition will highlight the works of established artists as well as those by recently discovered artists. This year, the entry criteria has been broadened by organisers to include new categories such as jewellery, woodwork, and textile art. Around 50 works will be on show and for sale at The Gate Conference Centre, 15 – 18th April 2022. All members of the public are welcome. and entry is by gold coin donation. The Central Otago Art Society will be holding their annual Cash and Carry Exhibition over the Easter period. Works by South Island artists, across a range of disciplines will be on show and for sale. Get along to the Clyde Masonic Hall on Sunderland Street, from the 14th through to the 18th of April. Scroll down to see more of What's On in the Arts in Central Otago.
