Swapo, the former liberation movement, has governed Namibia with a comfortable majority since independence in 1990. But, over the past five years, there’s been a major drop in support for the party. Henning Melber blames this on the party’s unfulfilled promises in office. He argues that, given the rise of credible opposition parties, it means that the party is not assured of victory in the general election at the end of the month.
