DOING OUR BEST FOR 125 YEARS

From The Principal

Dear Subiaco parents and caregivers
The chilly, Antarctic weather has been a perfect reason to cosy up and watch some unbelievable sporting prowess over the past weeks with the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, AFL and Rugby amongst many others.

Sport at every level offers a window into human nature and offers so much to teach our students including team work, resilience, commitment, disappointments, success, personal growth, even navigating media and communication in 2022.

On the Subiaco Primary School front, we enjoyed the Interschool Cross Country today and I was so impressed with the sportsmanship and the personal bests that Subiaco Primary School students focused on and achieved.

Congratulations to our top place-getters:

  • Year 3 Charlotte P and Sam L
  • Year 4 Jace H and Meline R
  • Year 5 Clara G abd Sam L
  • Year 6 Sienna H and Ferdie E

Sienna placed in the top 10 and is eligible to participate at the State level.
Special thanks to Mr Clancy who has been running before school training (during many freezing mornings) and kicking the dew off the grass along with the great support of Mr Egan. Thanks also to all the parents who supported the team today.

U1 entertained us this week with all the sights and sounds of the Birmingham Commonwealth games. Mr Quantock’s class were all engaged in the performance and their enjoyment emanated from the stage.

COVID-19

COVID-19 is still present in our school community. Classmates of positive cases are no longer classified as close contacts however, it is important that families are aware so they can remain vigilant should any symptoms present themselves.

Children Leaving The School

If your child will be leaving the school please email your child’s destination school and the fact they are leaving to subiaco.ps@education.wa.edu.au as soon as you have the required information.

125th Looking Back

Our 1910 flashback shows Year 4/5 students engaged in physical activity with their braces on. The lines and formation are very impressive as the boys work with weights.

Science Week (August 15th – 19th)

Science Week occurs next week in Week 5. The theme of Science week 2022 is Glass. Students across classes will be participating in a variety of exciting Science activities across the week.

Book Week 2022 (August 22nd – 26th)

Dreaming with eyes open...
This year Subiaco Primary School will be celebrating Book Week in Week 6 of this term. Students will be participating in a range of activities relating to the theme Dreaming with eyes open.

On Friday 26 August, we will have our dress-up day and parade for staff and students. The parade will occur in the undercover area at approx. 9.00am once classes have assembled. Students are encouraged to start thinking about their costumes relating to Book Week, so they are ready for the parade!

Open Night

We hope you will be able to join us for our annual Open Night on Wednesday 7 September, to share and celebrate aspects of your child’s learning journey.
Based on feedback from staff and parents, we will be scheduling 3 session times between 4.30-6.00pm established according to student’s surnames, this will help reduce the number of parents and students in the classroom at any one time.

Our class session times are:

  • 4.30-5.00pm: Surnames Q-Z
  • 5.00-5.30pm: Surnames H-P
  • 5.30-6.00pm: Surnames A-G

If you have more than one child at the school and you can’t attend your allocated time slot, please let me know and we will arrange an alternative time.
Look forward to seeing you on the night

The Fathering Project

Did you know that Subiaco Primary School is part of The Fathering Project?

The Fathering Project recognise that fathers, and father figures, play a vital role in children’s lives. The evidence demonstrating fathers’ potential to positively influence their children’s health and mental health, social success and academic achievements is now robust, indisputable, and compelling. It is an opportunity for fathers, and father figures to meet other Subi parents, build friendships, organise events that happen once a term and then attend with your kids.

Upcoming Event
Friday 2 September, 7:30am at Richard Diggins Park, Park Street. Dawn of the Dad! Join us and enjoy a Fathers' Day Breakfast and participate in a Walking School Bus. View the attachment for more information. Scan the QR code to purchase a ticket for $10.

If you would like more information, please contact Andrew Devitt (parent leader) andrew@devitt.com.au or Peter Hayward (Assistant Principal) peter.hayward@education.wa.edu.au

The Fathering Project is an evidence-based organisation that aims to promote positive fathering behaviours and fathers’ engagement with their infants, preschool, primary school and adolescent-aged children.

Student Support Team

Exciting news! Subiaco PS continues to build on the great work that is happening in the classrooms with the introduction of a Student Support Team (SST) designed to oversee policy, planning, teaching and assessment for students at educational risk (SAER), English as an additional language/dialect (EALD), and any students’ with attendance or behaviour concerns.

The SST consists of teachers and education assistants from across the school who will provide targeted student and class support through the analysis of student data.

Highlights so far –

  • Four Education Assistants trained to run the MiniLit and MacqLit literacy support programs. This highly successful, evidence based approach works with small groups of 4 or 5 students, four times a week for an hour with a 20 minute commitment of home reading.
  • A dedicated support teacher, employed one day a week to work in class with the year 1 and 2 classes in literacy and numeracy development.
  • An experienced EAL/D teacher, who is working half day a week to plot our students with limited English on the EALD Progress Maps and support teachers.
  • A literacy specialist who is working one day a week with our Early Years teachers to support our Guided Reading Program.

We continue to implement new and exciting programs and procedures in line with our Business Plan 2020 – 2023. Stay tuned for more SST highlights!

Non-School Provided Device Policy - Smart Watches and Mobile Phones

The school has a policy in place regarding the use of mobile phones and smart watches which aligns with the Department of Education's 'gate-to-gate' approach of not using these devices to communicate on school grounds.

Our priority for your child at school is to engage in the  learning and often these devices can be an unnecessary distraction. We understand that some families allow their child to have them for safety reasons before or after school. However, during the school day, the devices should be set to ‘school mode’ and not be used to communicate with parents or peers. If the device is becoming a distraction, the teacher or Admin will inform parents/carers. The following are some important aspects to be aware of:

- Students must not use their smart watch or mobile phone to communicate with their parents, each other or anyone during school hours. If a message needs to go home to parents, only the teacher or office can do so

- Students must not play games on the watches, or record audio

- Students that are distracted by their watch will be asked to put it away safely with the teacher and collect it at the end of the day.

- A student agreement must be signed by the student, parent and teacher before a smart watch or mobile phone can be brought to school.

Work Around The School

You may have noticed a flurry of work happening around the school. The upper internal hall roof started to show signs of collapse earlier in the term and was removed last weekend whilst no students were on site. A new roof will be built over the coming weeks. We are all enjoying the industrial look of the roof at the moment.

The limestone fence running alongside LP1 has had engineers assess the structural integrity and the report sates there is no immediate risk. A temporary fence has been erected in the interim until work is carried out on this limestone wall.

Playgrounds
In Term 2, the school undertook an audit of the playgrounds across the school. The scope of the works is currently being consulted on by the staff, teachers, students and P&C. The first stage will involve play equipment near the Year 1 classrooms, we are just awaiting an arborist report on the root systems of the Moreton Bay Figs in the Nature play area.

125th Concert Term 4
The 125th Committee has organized a concert for the students on Friday 18 November. The students will come down to the oval at lunch time and enjoy an afternoon of cultural activities and entertainment including an indigenous smoking ceremony, naming of the Nature Play and a concert amongst other activities.
This day will conclude at the normal time for students.

School Grounds After Hours
A friendly reminder that students should head home after school and not stay on the grounds after 3.40pm (exception - a scheduled and approved activity). There have been a number of injuries, near misses and issues after school including unsupervised children who have required assistance.

Healthy Hub Committee Looking For New Members

The Healthy Hub committee is looking for extra members to help with events, ideas and activities that improve the health of students and the school community (e.g. providing fresh fruit and vegetable platters at school events). The time commitment for members can be as little or as much as people are able to contribute, so if you’re interested, please email us at healthyhub.subi@gmail.com to see how you can be involved.

Dogs On Ovals

Dog Act 1976 states that no dogs are permitted on school property. As Subiaco Primary School is not fenced, we incur acts of graffiti, vandalism, and the presence of dogs on the school site. The increase in dogs on the school oval has caused distress to students participating in morning and afternoon education activities along with dog waste that the teachers and staff pick up daily.

The safety of our students, staff and school community is our highest priority and it is impossible to mitigate the risk presented by the unknown temperaments of restrained and unrestrained dogs. The school has consulted widely about this issue. That communication extends to the City of Subiaco, Subiaco Farmers Market (SFM), the School Board and the school’s Parents and Citizen’s Association (P&C).

Subiaco Primary School has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Subiaco Council which includes responding to complaints of dogs on school property and taking action in line with the Dog Act 1976; patrolling the area before and after school to ensure compliance with a ‘no dog’ without permission rule; installing and maintaining signs on school grounds.
The City of Subiaco is in the process of getting signs made for the school.

Year 6 Scitech Excursion
On Wednesday 10 August the Year 6 students went on a full day excursion to Scitech. It was an interesting, informative, and jam-packed day. Thanks to our parent volunteers for coming along and making the day possible. Click HERE to read some of the student's thoughts on the activities and HERE for photos.

Pre-primary 100 Days Celebration
Last Friday the Pre-primary students enjoyed a fabulous day of fun and learning as we celebrated having been at Pre-primary for 100 days!

We began the day by writing numbers 1-100 on paper plates and creating a long number line on the oval. The special day had a numeracy focus and the children engaged in a variety of hands on activities including building a tower using 100 cups, nerf gun numbers, 100 crown decorating, number hunts in the sand pit, making a 100 necklace using fruit loops and icing to decorate biscuits. They also participated in many other hands on activities using various blocks and manipulative materials.
It was great fun and the day tied in nicely with our HASS Celebrations unit. The children thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the day together as a whole Pre-primary group.

At the conclusion of the day the children all received a certificate of participation which read "I am 100 Days Smarter". Click HERE for photos.

Pre-primary and Year 5 Tree Day Planting
This Wednesday, U1 and U3 helped the Pre-primary children in EC2 and EC4 plant native species on the verge of Hamersley Road to improve the Environment in Subiaco. Mrs Brennan organises this each year with the Subiaco City Council. The Year 5 classes loved planting with the little kids and everybody learned how important caring for the local environment is - Christina, Aaron and Manuja in U1. Click HERE for photos

Year 5 Fremantle Prison Excursion
On Wednesday the Year 5 classes had an amazing excursion to the Fremantle Prison as part of our HASS curriculum this year. The children learnt many interesting facts about the history and construction of the prison and areas surrounding it in Fremantle, as well as Moondyne Joe’s escapades.

Uniform Shop News

Sport Socks are now available in the Uniform Shop! They are made from cotton rich fabric with reinforced toe and shaped heel for a better fit and durability. White with maroon trim they are a great match to the school uniform!  Available in 3 sizes to suit most students. Priced at $15.00 for a 2 pair pack.

The microfibre shorts are lightweight and popular for sports days and warmer weather. These are a shorter length and smaller fit so I advise buying a larger size than what your child fits in the woven school shorts.

I am seeking large size backpacks and girls leggings in good condition for the pre-loved rack if you have any to donate. Many thanks to those who have already donated as their children outgrow items!

Please remember to fill in your child's name and classroom number when ordering items online. This ensures speedy delivery to their class.
