Law School Bulletin March 2025
Welcome to your March student newsletter. Ramadan Mubarak to all our students who are currently observing Ramadan, and Happy Easter to those of you who will be marking Holy Week in April.
As we are nearing the end of Term 2, spring is upon us and the campus is blossoming. Do take some time away from the library and/or your computer screen and go have a walk around the scenic paths and flowery gardens. This will be both relaxing and inspiring!
As you prepare for the University break and the upcoming assessments, we’re sharing wellbeing advice and study tips to help you through this period. We also hear from Rose Arhin, second year law student who has just been elected as Communities and Equality Officer for the Students’ Guild, and her plans for the forthcoming academic year.
Make the most of this final week of term: continue to engage with your modules and to participate in the life of the Law School! There are still some events going on and it would be fantastic to see you at the prestigious annual Lasok Lecture on Wednesday afternoon (full details below).
And of course we wish you all a very Happy April, whether you are staying here, heading home or traveling around. If you are staying on campus for the break, the Easter on Campus web pages have useful information for you.

📖Education Matters ✒️
As the second term ends, it is time to turn our attention to the end of module assessments. This year might be different for many of you, as some of the Year 2 credit has been assessed in earlier assessments, and some of you will only have one exam (but potentially several coursework assessments).
Planning your time will be key: try to do some of your coursework early, so that you aren’t managing too many assessments at the same time. Carve out time in your diary for assessment preparation and revision but also recognise that you will need some relaxation or social time as well.
To help with your revision, or provide some relief from it, Law School staff have put together a few ideas on this webpage. And even though this is the second time most of you have gone into the assessment period at Exeter, it is never too late to reflect on your skills and time management – please continue to use the resources on the ELE Gateway and the Study Zone. We wish you well in these assessments.

The New Multifaith Centre
The University recently welcomed Law alumna Sarah Turvill back to campus to plant a tree to mark the official opening of the new Multifaith Centre. For many years Sarah has been involved with the University and is a former chair of the University Council. She was involved in the plans for the Multifaith Centre, from the initial design stages through to its completion. Sarah is pictured with the President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Lisa Roberts.
📢Your Voice
New Communities and Equality Officer: 2025-26
Congratulations to second year LLB student Rose Arhin, who has been elected as the sabbatical officer for the Students' Guild as the new Communities and Equality Officer for the next academic year. Rose has shared her aims and ambitions for the role:
I am very excited and grateful for this role as it gives me the opportunity to contribute to building a more inclusive community in the University. As an ethnic student, my own experience of not always fitting in made my transition into university life challenging. Now, in this position, I hope to explore ways to help bridge those gaps and create a welcoming space for all students.
I am also keen to engage with the Law School to explore ways in which students can feel supported. This may include discussions around student wellbeing, academic representation and opportunities for professional development. There are already existing pathways such as Exeter Law Society, Diversity in Law and Women in Law societies that are helping create a bigger community but I aim to make these more accessible and known by students to improve participation. I look forward to working collaboratively with students and staff to help improve the law student experience in meaningful ways.
Dr. Rama Sahtout & Dr. Charlie Bishop (Academic Leads for Student Support (Racial Equality & Inclusion) for Law) would like to invite you to a drop-in session with the Law School’s Academic Leads for Student Support: Racial Equality & Inclusion (ALSS-REI). This is a space to openly discuss any concerns or experiences you would like to share with us.
They will take place on Fridays 10:30-12:30, online. Book a slot here.
The drop-in aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught students to raise any concerns related to belonging, racial discrimination, disability, sexual orientation, religion and beliefs, or any other form of discrimination and inclusion.
You are welcome to talk to us about academic matters, such as assessments and feedback or teaching materials, employability support, well-being, or about any discrimination against protected characteristics you have experienced or witnessed.
🙌 CONGRATULATIONS 🎉
Congratulations to second year students Jade Effemy, Anna Balson and Milly Gould who competed at the Featherstone Moot 2025 for LGBTQ+ History Month. They were assisted by third year student Alex Cumming and Dr Ben Hudson. The team made it to the oral rounds (where only 35 teams out of 100 were selected) held at the London School of Economics. The team also attended seminars by leading barristers and competed against students from all around the country.
And congratulations to Renee Trestyen and Atticus Walton-Hayfield for reaching the final of the CEDR National Student Negotiation Competition in Leeds and tackling some challenging scenarios along the way.
Client Advice Letter Competition results
Thank you to all students who entered the Client Advice Letter Competition. Congratulations to second year LLB student Anna Burma who was the winner and to Keira Fernandes, also second year LLB, who was the runner up.
📆 Module Fair
Thank you to all who participated in the undergraduate Module Fair. This year’s fair took place online and featured videos from module convenors, supported by interactive Q&A and drop-in sessions. We hope all students found the fair helpful in making their decisions for next year. Keep an eye out for our upcoming feedback form, where you’ll get the chance to share your thoughts and shape the fairs of the future.
📆 Opportunities and Events
Our Opportunities page is where we place a variety of employability events, Mooting competitions and other items you may find of interest. The page is updated regularly with new opportunities. Recent additions include details of One Essex Court open day, Sports Law Placement with Exeter City FC, sessions to help with academic writing skills and opportunities with a student-founded water charity.
The brain and Jury decisions
Researchers from the Evidence Based Justice Lab at the University of Exeter are looking for adult volunteers to participate in research studies using brain imaging to better understand how people make decisions about legal evidence.
Participation will involve completion of a short online study (approximately 15 minutes) and completion of a decision-making task while undergoing an fMRI brain scan (approximately 60-75 minutes). Dates and times for participating are flexible, and participants who complete the study will receive £125 compensation for participation and expenses.

The Career Zone team is here to help you plan your career and to help you gain the skills and experience you need to achieve it. Their support includes:
- application, CV and cover letter writing
- planning and preparing for interviews and assessment centres
- advice on finding work experience, graduate jobs, or postgraduate study
suggesting free workshops and events that suit you best.
Law careers appointments are available for all Law students and they are really useful if you are not sure what you want to do. Find out how to book an appointment with Laura and Tess.
