New 80km/h speed limits between Waitara and Bell Block from today

Motorists are reminded that new permanent speed limits for State Highway 3 (SH3) between Waitara and Bell Block in Taranaki are in effect from today (18 Dec 2020).

The new speed limits create a consistent 80km/h speed limit between Waitara and Bell Block, improving safety on the highway ahead of the busy holiday period.

Motorists should keep a look out for the new speed limit signs and take extra care on the route while everyone is getting used to the new speed limits.

If possible, locals are asked to give family and friends travelling to the region for the holidays a heads up about new speed limits before they come.

The setting of the permanent speed limits follows engagement with New Zealand Police, the AA, and Road Transport Forum, and consultation with the public. Waka Kotahi thanks everyone who made a submission during consultation.

From Friday 18 December the permanent speed limits are:

  • 360m east of Mahoetahi Rd to 400m west of Princess Street  - 80km/h
  • 430m east of Princess St to 300m east of Bayly St -  80km/h

More information on the permanent speed limits and our consultation summary, including the submissions can be found here
