Latest Updates from ABVP

President's Message

Gary Thompson, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline), President

What a terrific Symposium in Chicago! It was great to see old friends, make new ones and finally get together again. I would like to thank the Regents for putting together great programs. Dr. Olds-Sanchez for her work in getting the dental wet labs to the finish line and especially Dr. Nollner, Marisa and her team for their tireless efforts in putting together a wonderful program. We were able to recognize a record number of new Diplomates at the dinner on Saturday and I had the honor of being able to present Drs. Jensen and Townsend their past-president awards. ABVP and I thank you for your service over the last few years. We are eternally grateful. In our first in-person COR meeting in a few years, we were able to hammer out some changes to bylaws with a unanimous vote that will be coming your way in the coming weeks for approval. It will allow the Board of Directors to be more productive while still maintaining the representation of all of our specialties and committees. Hopefully, Spring has sprung in your part of the world and I know this is a busy time for our large animal colleagues. For me it’s time to hit the road and get the gravel bikes out and spend time on the saddle. So, I hope you get the chance to enjoy the season wherever you are and as always thank you for the privilege of being able to serve such a wonderful group of people.

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Update

Sonnya Dennis, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline), MOC Chair

  • Do NOT wait until your 7th year.

  • Catch up on Journal Club - it is ongoing. Be sure to complete 4 of the 6 every year. These are not perpetually available and are meant to reflect and keep us together on current data. These are separate from the other points and a 0.01 point placeholder is used. We are currently working with Prolydian and Survey Monkey for a better way to do this!

  • Go to ABVP.com, click “Member Login” (top bar), then “log in'' (top right). You will find links to “Access MOC Portal” and Journal Club on the left side.

  • NEW! How To Guides:

    • 15-minute overview of ABVP Maintenance of Certification and Prolydian MOC Portal (narrated slides)

    • Demonstration of live upload of Journal Club quiz in less than 3 minutes

    • Update email in CRM and MOC

  • Each RVS has a Vice Chair for MOC who is there to help! Email information is in the  MOC Handbook.

ABVP – Did You Know?

Did you know that the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners has Diplomates in 49 US States and in 16 foreign countries including, but not limited to, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Netherlands, New Zealand, St. Kitts, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom?

Did you know that ABVP has residencies across the US and around the world including programs in Canada, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and New Zealand?

Did you know that ABVP offers board certification in 11 different Recognized Veterinary Specialties (RVS) including: Avian, Beef Cattle, Canine and Feline, Dairy, Equine, Exotic Companion Mammal, Feline, Food Animal, Reptile & Amphibian, Shelter Medicine, and Swine Health Management?

Did you know that ABVP has at least 28 Diplomates certified in 2 RVS categories, 1 Diplomate certified in 3 RVS categories, and 1 Diplomate certified in 4 RVS categories. WOW! What a group of ambitious achievers!!!

Did you know that ABVP was one of the first major veterinary specialty groups to require Diplomates to maintain certification every 10 years! All other specialty groups have followed in our footsteps, at the direction of the American Board of Veterinary Specialities, to require maintenance of certification. We were leaders in maintenance of certification!

ABVP is going to continue to keep sharing information like this, as well as highlighting Diplomates and ABVP residency programs. We would like to invite all Diplomates to submit your own information to equineregent@abvp.com or outreach@abvp.com to get included on our social media posts!  You can also submit to info@abvp.com. We know you tend to be a super successful and ambitious group, but reserved when it comes to advertising about yourself. Don’t be shy! We need your help to generate content and spotlight the amazing things our Diplomates are doing. You can also nominate other Diplomates, practices with Diplomates, or residency programs. If you don’t want to be flooded with just equine profiles, please send us some information from all of the species groups. Please and thank you!!

Lastly, we at ABVP are hoping to build a bigger Outreach Team. We are looking for volunteers from all of the species groups and locations all over the U.S. and world to join us as Outreach Ambassadors. The duties will be fairly simple and not hugely time consuming, but vital to the survival and growth of ABVP.  Volunteering on the Outreach Committee also earns volunteerism points for your maintenance of certification. So if you have a few minutes to spare, are social media savvy, have contacts at any local veterinary universities, and/or enjoy public speaking, please send us a message. We can find a role for you.

ABVP Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee

The ABVP Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee was propelled into creation after the protests and displays of systemic racism and injustice during the summer of 2020. Comprised of 7 members across species specialties, this committee was created out of the collective desire for change. The rationale for forming this committee is that ABVP is integral in the global One Health Initiative with our species-specialized knowledge, and we want to ensure we have the cultural competence to address global health concerns. Our first task was to perform a self-assessment of our member demographics. Additionally, ABVP was invited to participate in a collaborative project with the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) The cornerstone of the project was a survey designed to better understand the factors that contribute to clinician wellness and also included questions on key demographic data. Our committee gave input to identify survey topics that focused on barriers to specialization as they relate to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The survey is complete, and AAVMC will grant access to aggregated data, as well as ABVP-specific aggregated data, where appropriate. The following is the data collected from the 252 Diplomates who filled out our demographic survey in the fall of 2020.

View the data here.

With a foundational knowledge that veterinary excellence requires a diversity of perspectives, ideas, and approaches, the DEI Committee will develop a strategic and incremental plan that leads ABVP into the future by creating a roadmap to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in veterinary medicine.
