Opening up access to the Upper Māngere Inlet
This month’s update is dedicated to all the boaties who enjoy travelling on the Manukau Harbour as once the new bridge opens, there’ll be benefits for you too.
We’ve often heard how much the harbour is a popular spot for whānau and friends to enjoy an afternoon on the water. To help open up access, the new bridge has been designed to provide a greater clearance underneath along with fewer piers to navigate when travelling underneath too.
In high tide, there’ll be an approx. 4m clearance and in low tide, this will increase to approx. 8 m. We caught up with our neighbours Waka Ama to find out what this means for them and their members.
“We have approx. 120 tamariki and adults in our Portage Crossing Canoe Club who are passionate about training out on the harbour. Our club have watched with anticipation the build of the bridge and are looking forward to paddling out, knowing there is a greater clearance under the bridge. It means we can safely increase our training area to include the upper inlet, and safer docking at the boat ramp,” says Carla Pearce, Equipment Manager.
