Pohutukawa tree savers to the rescue

We are working hard to protect and preserve our flora and fauna along SH20B.

And it was great to learn that our neighbours from Trees of Distinction and Black Bridge Nurseries have experience in saving trees.

In order to widen SH20B, we were obliged to remove a group of thirty-year-old Pohutukawa trees on the corner of Prices Road.

The tree roots were carefully exposed using hand tools and a large dose of patience.

Ten tonnes of care and a great big truck

Weighing around ten tonnes and with a branch span of more than eight metres, the trees were eased from the ground and lifted on to a transporter.

"It's a bit like moving a house" say tree specialists Jon Steele and Martin Gohns,"You can't lay the trees on their sides because you can easily cause serious damage to the branches. They must be carried upright and very carefully."

The trees now need to `sit quietly' for 18 months so their roots have a chance to recover and they can be moved to a new home.  We wish them a long and happy life!

Introducing our on-site Construction Manager Ash Mitchell

Ash has spent the last 12 years holding various engineering roles across both Fulton Hogan’s regional business and Major Projects divisions in the South Island.

“I’ve always had a passion for engineering and I’m a real believer in the strength of a good team” says Ash who isn’t daunted by the fact that more than 270 personnel have so far been inducted into the SH20B ‘family’ as work has ramped up over the last four months.

“My favourite part of the job is working out how we are going to build something and then seeing it come to fruition on site. If it’s worth doing, then it’s worth doing right first time for quality outcomes.”

Story

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland International Airport Limited are upgrading State Highway 20B for better and more reliable travel options with a new shared path and additional priority lanes between Pukaki Creek Bridge and State Highway 20.

This project will integrate with improved transport facilities within the airport precinct along SH20B and at the upgraded Puhinui Station Interchange.

The project is the first step of the Southwest Gateway programme to provide better public transport, walking and cycling facilities with safer and more efficient freight movements to, from and around Southwest Auckland.

Fulton Hogan undertakes this work on behalf of Waka Kotahi.

Key early improvements on State Highway 20B to be delivered by 2021 include:

  • A safe place for people to walk and ride bikes
  • Safety improvements including central median barrier protection, improved lighting and a reduced speed
  • Improved pavement, drainage and stormwater treatment
  • Two improved intersections at Campana Road and Manukau Memorial Gardens.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency works to create transport solutions for all New Zealanders – from helping new drivers earn their licences, to leading safety campaigns to investing in public transport, state highways and local roads.
