If you've ever tried to identify a butterfly in your garden, chances are you've come across some information based on the research of Waverley local Gustavus Athol Waterhouse. Born in 1877, his mother was the daughter of local philanthrope Ebenezer Vickery, and his father served as Waverley Council alderman. Waterhouse’s interest in natural sciences began at an early age, and as a schoolboy he spent his lunch hours browsing the Australian Museum. His butterfly collection began in 1893, and by 1903 he had prepared an authoritative catalogue of Australian butterflies. In 1914 Waterhouse published the pioneering book Butterflies of Australia with
colleague George Lyell. Read more at Museums Victoria.
