SPOTLIGHT ON SPH STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS

Our School’s strategy map identifies five strategic directions—cities and health; climate, the planet, and health; health inequities; infectious diseases; and mental and behavioral health—that are of critical importance to the public’s health and are areas of strength and potential for growth for the School. These strategic directions emerged from broad consultation both internal and external to the School.

Climate, the planet, and health

Boston University School of Public Health is at the forefront of research that deepens our understanding of the health, social, and economic consequences of climate change, and what we might do to mitigate these effects. We are also committed to addressing the health gaps that arise from, and are worsened by, a warming planet.  As part of our commitment to this agenda, we have launched a center dedicated to scholarship in the area and to educating future generations. Our new Center on Climate and Health, led by Professor Gregory Wellenius, has three areas of focus:

I.

The health impacts of climate change

Extreme Heat Linked to Increase in Mental Health Emergency Care

On extremely hot summer days, US adults were at an increased risk of visiting emergency rooms for mental health crises related to substance use, anxiety, stress, and more.

II.

Actions that the public can take today to mitigate the effects of climate change in the future

Increasing Urban Greenery Could Have Prevented at Least 34,000 Deaths over Two Decade

A new analysis found that between 34,000-38,000 could have been reduced with local increases in green vegetation in US metropolitan areas from 2000-2019.

III.

Climate resilience—evidence-based research and guidance that enables cities to adapt to this worsening crisis

Amid Climate Change, SPH Researchers Study Chelsea’s ‘Heat Island’

Madeleine Scammell and Patricia Fabian are studying air and ground temperatures in Chelsea, Mass., an urban “heat island” that’s getting hotter from climate change.
