Completion works update

The final asphalt was successfully laid earlier this month on the Loop Road roundabout and immediate approaches.

Remaining completion works, including road surfacing and traffic island installation at the northern end of site, will get underway early in the new year.

Note that a temporary seal has been laid in this area to provide water protection, but it is not strong enough to hold traffic and is coned off for this reason.

No roadworks over holidays

Crews will not be working at SH1 Loop Road over the Christmas and New Year period and the site will be left as clear as possible.

The road layout will be as is currently, with line marking, centre safety sticks and cones reinforced for holiday traffic. Cones will be moved back from the edge line to avoid wider vehicles knocking them into the live lanes.

This shutdown period is common across most Waka Kotahi work sites as it enables holiday traffic to flow more freely, helping support the local economy, as well as those travelling to reconnect with friends and whānau.

Stage two

An update on the second stage of the project will be provided in the new year. Work planned for this stage involves the construction of a southbound lane on SH1 and a new bridge to enable us to increase the roundabout to two lanes.
