Waitematā Harbour Connections

9 February 2023

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who came to our community events in November and December 2022 and completed our survey, sharing your views on the Waitematā Harbour Connections project.

Overwhelmingly, our survey results show strong support for the project. Your feedback helps us understand how and why people currently cross Te Waitematā and how you wish to travel in the future.

This valuable information is helping inform our option development. We will share details about these options and ways to give feedback in late March, with a recommended way forward delivered mid-2023.

What we heard

We received 4389 survey responses and met with more than 1200 people at six events on both sides of Te Waitematā. While 30% of  people currently cross the harbour using public transport, 88% said they would catch a bus or train if they could. Check out more key insights below.

If you’d like to read more, including some verbatim comments from the community, have a look at the full report of our engagement to date

Walk it. Wheel it.

Coming up in March, 60,000 people of all ages and abilities will get the chance to experience the Auckland Harbour Bridge on foot, bike, scooter or other wheeled devices.

Known as Walk It. Wheel It., this event series will take place on Sunday 12, 19 and 26 March (with a rain date of Sunday 2 April).

The Waitematā Harbour Connections team will be at each event too, so come and find us to talk more about future connections.

Waka Kotahi is releasing tickets later this month. We’ll let you know when that happens so you can secure entry to one of the most exciting walking and cycling events in Tāmaki Makaurau for you and your whānau.

Hearing from our young people

How do young Aucklanders imagine the possibilities for future harbour connections?

At the end of last year we started reaching out to primary schools  with interactive learning opportunities led by some experts from our project team.  The task brief for the students? Imagine and build your own connection across Te Waitematā.

Newshub came to visit while we were at Bayfield School in Herne Bay where the kids blew us away with their amazing models of future connections, and questions and insights about the project. Watch the Newshub clip here.

More school visits – primary and secondary - are planned this year.

Next steps

We’ll be back in touch with our communities on both sides of the harbour from late March as we're keen to hear your feedback – there’ll also be the chance to have your say online.
