THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON 1963

On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people gathered for a landmark event that forever shaped American history: a march to the Lincoln Memorial that culminated in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. The extraordinary success of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom paved the way for passage of transformative civil and voting rights legislation.

“Let Us March On…”  reimagines the historic March on Washington blending live actors and multimedia footage that recreates moments from the March on Washington to mark its 60th anniversary.

Written by acclaimed playwright and director Nikki Toombs, this one-night-only performance will transport you back to August 28, 1963, with soul-stirring gospel from Mahalia Jackson and electrifying speeches from organizers John Lewis, Daisy Bates, Bayard Rustin and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream.”  This immersive experience will relive that glorious day on the National Mall in 1963, and offer inspiration to continue to move the path forward today.

Our honoree this year is civil rights icon, Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams. We will also recognize Women of the Movement, who did not always receive credit for their efforts in the civil rights struggle.  Ambassador Andrew Young is our Honorary Chair.
