Water and environmental policy lead Canberra talks

Water and environmental policy were top of the agenda during Cotton Australia’s political engagement in Canberra this week.

Cotton Australia Chair Liz Stott, Board members Daniel Kahl, Gavin Dal Broi and April Cavanagh, along with CEO Adam Kay and General Manager Michael Murray spent the past few days in Canberra conducting a range of meetings and engagements with senior government ministers, members of the Opposition and key water agencies.

APVMA publishes final decision on paraquat and diquat herbicides

The APVMA has released its final decision on paraquat and diquat, removing cotton-specific uses from product labels. This means they can no longer be used for crop desiccation or controlling cotton volunteers. Cotton Australia is working with Crop Consultants Australia and CRDC to assess the impacts for cotton systems, including fallow practices and alternative weed control options under the new rules.

The segment highlighted Camp Cotton’s role in connecting global brands and retailers directly with growers, offering an immersive, on-the-ground experience that helps the other end of the supply chain better understand how Australian cotton is grown and processed.

Content Creators visit the Darling Downs

Bringing Australian Cotton to new audiences through influencer visit 

Three Brisbane content creators visited the Darling Downs as part of a Cotton Australia initiative to share how Australian cotton is grown and build trust with urban audiences. The visit included farm and gin tours and conversations with Darling Downs growers, with creators now sharing their experiences across their own platforms.

Murray–Darling Basin Leadership Program

Run by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, this program brings together people from across the Basin to work on issues and build understanding between sectors. It is important irrigated agriculture is part of these conversations, so grower experience is represented in future Basin decisions. Applications are open for cohort 2 (to be held in Wagga) from September 2026 and includes workshops, online sessions and project work. Applications close 2 August 2026.

Tax change delivers a win for thousands of farmers

The Federal Government has announced changes to Capital Gains Tax rules that will make a key tax concession available to more farm businesses. The change follows advocacy from the National Farmers’ Federation, which was supported by Cotton Australia through its own submission.

It is expected to help farming families with succession planning, asset transfers and long-term business planning.
