Citybound lane from Main South Road opening this weekend

From this Sunday, a single citybound lane on the new motorway will open at the Main South Road bridge.

To prepare for these changes, night works will start on Thursday 11 June on Main South Road (SH1) between Hoskyns Road and Waterholes Road.

From Sunday 14 June:

  • Northbound traffic heading towards Templeton/Hornby/Airport will stay on Main South Road
  • Northbound traffic heading towards the city can take the new motorway
  • The new motorway off-ramp at the Shands Road Interchange will also open.

Please take it carefully and be patient

Traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place – please follow the signs and maintain travel distances.

Motorists travelling in the new citybound lane on the motorway will notice the position of traffic will change. Shifting traffic around like this helps to embed the chip.

Crews will be back at the end of the year to lay the final low-noise asphalt surfacing.

Cyclists and Pedestrians

Cyclists and pedestrians are not permitted on the motorway. Signage is in place onsite to assist cyclists and pedestrians in following the available routes.

A shared-use path linking the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 1 cycle/pedestrian shared path with the existing Little River Rail Trail is in the final stages of construction and is scheduled to open later next month.

Please visit the FAQ page for answers to questions on time-frames, road surfacing and more.

Thank you for your ongoing patience during the final stages of construction of the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 Project.
