Funding to make SH2 Wairarapa safer

Kia ora koutou

Late last year Transport Minister Michael Wood announced that we’ve secured funding to make State Highway 2 between Masterton and Carterton safer.

We’ve been making great progress since then and we’re pleased to let you know that we’re working towards starting construction in late March.

The team are currently analysing the community feedback and finalising conversations with landowners. Following this we’ll make any required changes to the design, confirm the contractor and start enabling works.

The package of safety improvements includes flexible safety barriers, pedestrian crossings for school children, walking and cycling paths, road widening, new signage and new roundabouts at Ngaumutawa Road, Norfolk Road and East Taratahi/Wiltons Road.

These improvements will make it safer for people to do everyday things  like taking children to school, travelling to work or the shops, moving goods and doing business.

We know many of these improvements are long-awaited, especially the new roundabouts. We’d like to thank everyone who has shared their thoughts and insights along the way to help shape this plan.
We’ll share an engagement summary and our final designs in the coming weeks.

Before we start construction we'll also share details around what work will take place first, and in which areas.  It’s likely the first few months of construction will be focused on utility relocations and other enabling works, before work can get under way on any of the roundabouts and other improvements.

SH2 Masterton to Featherston speed consultation update

Thank you to everyone who shared their insights and thoughts on the new speed limits we’re proposing on State Highway 2 between Masterton and Featherston.

Our team is currently analysing all the submissions received via the various different channels, including email, online and post. We received more than 1000 pieces of feedback across all channels.

We'll let the community know as soon as we've made our decision and the announcement of any speed changes will be made well in advance of any changes.

Changing speed limits is a legal process and all speed reviews undertaken by Waka Kotahi are developed and delivered in line with the Speed Management Guide and the Setting of Speed Limits Rule.
