COVID-19 Pānui no. 81

Kua tawhiti tō tātou ki te kore e haere tonu, he nui a tātou māhi ki te kore e mahi nui tonu.

This has certainly been one of the longest weeks for many of our Kōhanga reo. Many of us have been debating with ourselves, our kaimahi, and whānau, for solutions of being unvaccinated.

The easiest solution is to be vaccinated and return to Kōhanga Reo.

He mihi nui to all our guest speakers on our podcast “Whaioranga”: Peggy Luke who spoke about vaccinations for Ikaroa, Tame Iti, Mana Motuhake and Tino Rangatiratanga. We also had Whaea Rocky Tahuri who spoke about having Covid and why she believed the vaccine helped her beat Covid.

Our podcast Whaioranga is more than just about Covid, it’s about the health and wellbeing of our mokopuna, whānau, and Kaimahi. Have a restful and safe weekend e te whānau.

Ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa.

Current situation

The consistent spread of COVID-19 to regions throughout Aotearoa is a reminder to protect your loved ones by getting vaccinated if eligible, wearing a mask, keeping a safe distance from people outside your bubble, and keeping track of your movements outside your home.

Today, there are 198 new cases in the community:

  • 152 in Tāmaki Makaurau
  • 30 in Waikato
  • 5 in Northland
  • 6 in Bay of Plenty
  • 2 in Lakes
  • 1 in each of MidCentral, Wairarapa, and Canterbury

This brings our total community cases in the current outbreak to 6,532.

There are currently:

  • 76 people in hospital
  • 6 in ICU/HDU

The average age of hospitalisations now sits at 50.

Today, there are new cases in Northland, Tāmaki, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Wairarapa, and Canterbury. One of the Bay of Plenty’s cases was first announced yesterday and has been added to today’s tally. All cases are self-isolating at home, meanwhile, a Bay of Plenty school closed today as a precaution due to a link to one of the cases. All students and staff have been offered tests.

Last night, a weak positive COVID-19 result was identified under surveillance testing in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. The positive result came from an essential worker from Tāmaki who was working in the city. The Ministry of Health (MoH) stated that this positive result could indicate a historical case or a case in the earlier stages of infection. The worker is being tested again today, including their co-workers.

In addition, only 755 more Māori from Tāmaki DHB need to receive their first dose to reach 90 percent of Māori having received their first dose. Seventy-five percent are already fully vaccinated in this DHB so far.
