Free webinar: Waste Less, Celebrate More

The Christmas season is a time to connect, give, share and celebrate - but it’s also one of the most waste-intensive periods of the year. To promote a more thoughtful and sustainable festive season, Clean Up Australia is hosting a free webinar in collaboration with sustainability educator Annie Woollard. The session will explore common sources of waste at Christmas, include an interactive quiz, and offer practical tips on mindful consumerism and low-impact celebrations.

This year’s message is especially timely as Council prepares to roll out its new food-waste service in March next year. The upcoming service will keep our food waste out of landfill and turn it into a nutrient rich soil conditioner and green electricity - but the most powerful action we can take is still preventing food waste in the first place.

For more ideas on celebrating sustainably, read Lane Cove Council’s tips for a Sustainable Christmas. You can also register for the Clean Up Australia webinar via the link below.

Towards Electrification of the Lane Cove Aquatic Leisure Centre

Lane Cove Council was successful in securing funding of over $1.14 million from the Australian Government’s Community Energy Upgrades Fund to replace selected gas boilers at the Lane Cove Aquatic Leisure Centre with more energy efficient electric heat pumps. The project is expected to cut annual energy bills by $130,000 - $270,000, reduce total annual energy usage by 2.9 million kWh, and cut annual emissions by 433-740 tonnes CO₂-e.

The project is an exciting move toward achieving Council’s net-zero goals and will significantly lower Councils gas consumption, as the Centre currently makes up 99% of Council’s total gas use.

National roll out of Smart Meters

From December 2025, Ausgrid is beginning to upgrade all homes to smart electricity meters as part of a national rollout.

These new meters provide more accurate bills, no manual meter reads, and better insight into how you use energy - helping households save in the long run.

These smart meters are also installed at no cost to residents.

Ausgrid is set to start replacing meters in Lane Cove from December 2026 - contact your electricity retailer for more information about when your smart meter installation is scheduled.

Financial incentive for installation of EV Chargers

Your strata building may be eligible for subsidised electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure through a new government-backed initiative.
Nox Energy has secured funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to help accelerate EV adoption in strata buildings. This is an excellent opportunity to upgrade your building’s electrical infrastructure at a reduced cost.

To qualify, strata buildings must:
•    Install a minimum of five Intelligent Power Sockets (IPS)
•    Have the strata committee approve the installation within a reasonable timeframe and nominate a contact for an incentive trial
•    Allow resident surveys before and after installation
•    Agree to share anonymised charging data for research purposes
