Carers WA COVID-19 Update - 1st February 2022 

The health and safety of carers, their families and the wider community is the highest priority for Carers WA. 

As of 1st February, proof of vaccination will be required to enter any Carers WA premise, to receive in-person services, and to attend any Carers WA workshop event. 

Carers WA are committed to complying with the State Government's vaccination and mask policies and will continue to follow government directives as WA prepares for the challenges ahead. We will continue to work on ways to minimise impacts wherever possible, both to our team and the carers and community we support.

Carers Connect has been extended 

Do you want support to start education or employment? 

Carers WA has been successful in securing a second round of funding for the Carers Connect to Education and Employment project, through The Department of Social Services. This program will be delivered by Carers WA in partnership with the Australian Medical Association. 

Carers Connect provides an opportunity for carers to study and/or gain employment in the Care Industry (e.g Aged Care, Community Service, Disability, Health Care and Mental Health) or another industry with skill shortages. 

The Carers Connect Team will provide one-on-one coaching to help you to identify skills and overcome barriers, and financial assistance to enrol in training and support you to achieve your career goals. 

To be eligible for this program, carers must: 

• Be in a caring role within the last 2 years
• Be aged between 16 - 65 years  
• Currently unemployed or under-employed 
• Interested in gaining a career in the Care Industry, or any other industry with skill shortages.

Compassion Fatigue and Healthy Boundaries Workshop 

Carers WA presents an interactive workshop for carers exploring common challenges when caring for a family member, friend or loved one. This workshop, facilitated by Louisa Holmes, focuses on creating self-supporting behaviours and skills to prevent burn-out. 

Where: Canning River Eco Centre | Corner Kent St and Queens Park Rd, Wilson.

Be the voice for carers - Carer Representation Orientation 

Use your experience as a carer to stand up for and represent the voices of carers in your community as a carer representative. 

Benefits of this program include; 

• Meet and discuss issues with like-minded carers 
• Learn new skills 
• Develop confidence 
• Make a difference in how carers are treated in the health and mental health systems. 

Attend our upcoming Carer Representation Orientation, a half-day information session which shows how your lived experience can influence change.

Be Job Ready 2022 Course - Expression of Interest 

Expressions of Interest for the next Be Job Ready Course are now open! 

The course is specifically designed to assist carers in the return to employment by providing realistic information and practical skills which can be utilised to secure and maintain employment. 

This program runs over 10 sessions (2 hours per session) with key job-related skills and techniques covered in each session.  

To be eligible for this program, carers: 

• Must be in a caring role within the last 12 months  
• Be aged between 14 - 65 years 
• Live in or near the Perth Metropolitan area.

Have your say in the Mental Health Act! 

The Mental Health Commission is reviewing the Mental Health Act. Living Proud (LGBTIQ+ Community Services of WA) are coordinating consultations with members of the LGBTIQ+ community to share their experience. 

To gain feedback on your experience with the Act, group discussion sessions will be held. Individual interviews are available upon request. 

When: Thursday, 3rd February | 6.00pm - 8.00pm. 
             Saturday, 5th February | 10.00am - 12.00pm.

Register to be part of research projects with Curtin University 

Australia has world class health and medical researchers who have been responsible for many life changing breakthroughs that have benefitted the Australian and international community.

But the ability to conduct this research in Australia depends on being able to recruit enough people into studies which can take many months and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars to do. Many studies fall over at this hurdle because they just don't get enough people to participate.

That’s why The George Institute, in partnership with Curtin University, has launched a register called Join Us, which aims to recruit a million Australians who agree to be contacted if there is a study that might be appropriate for them.

Ultimately, the goal of this project is to achieve better health and wellbeing for all Australians by more rapidly translating new research findings into practice.

Western Australian Seniors Strategy 

Consultation has now opened to develop West Australia's first dedicated Seniors Strategy.

The strategy is committed to improving individual, family and community wellbeing. Despite significant government and community action, and changing attitudes towards ageing, many older people still face isolation, loneliness and abuse within the community. 

 To ensure the strategy is a reflection of the views of older Western Australians, the Department of Communities is inviting you to complete a survey. To complete the survey and find further information, click here.
